Soon Dorothy and her friends received a message from the Wizard of Oz

不久，多萝西和她的朋友们收到了奥兹大法师传来的一条消息。

It said, I will see you tomorrow. Do not call the Winged Monkeys

消息说：我明天会见你们。不要召唤飞猴。

They all went to sleep and dreamed of the gifts that Oz had promised to give them

他们都去睡觉了，梦想着奥兹承诺要给他们的礼物。

The next morning a soldier came to get them

第二天早上，一个士兵来接他们。

He brought them into the Wizard's throne room, and they were shocked to find it empty

Dorothy and her friends were each expecting to see Oz as he had first appeared to them

" I am Oz, the Great and Terrible. Why do you seek me?" said a deep voice

Dorothy and her friends looked for the speaker, but they couldn't see anyone

多萝西和她的朋友们寻找说话的人，但他们看不见任何人。

" Wh — where are you?" asked a frightened Dorothy

" I am everywhere," answered the voice

" We have come to claim what was promised to us," continued Dorothy

" What was promised?" asked Oz

“承诺过什么？”奥兹问。

" You promised to help me get back to Kansas," said Dorothy

“你答应过帮我回堪萨斯，”多萝西说。

" And you promised me a brain," said the Scarecrow

“你答应过给我一个大脑，”稻草人说。

" You promised me a heart," said the Tin Man

“你答应过给我一颗心，”铁皮人说。

" And you promised me courage," said the Lion

“你答应过给我勇气，”狮子说。

" Is the Witch dead?" asked the voice

“女巫死了吗？”那个声音问。

旁白 neutral

" Yes," said Dorothy." I melted her with water."

“是的，”多萝西说，“我用水把她溶化了。”

" Oh dear," said the voice

“哦，天哪，”那个声音说。

旁白 neutral

" Well, come to me tomorrow. I need some time to think."

“好吧，明天再来找我。我需要些时间想想。”

" Time? You've had plenty of time to think!" said the Tin Man angrily

“时间？你已经有很多时间考虑了！”铁皮人生气地说。

" We won't wait," agreed the Scarecrow

“我们不会再等了。”稻草人同意道。

" Yes, you must keep your promises," said Dorothy firmly

“是的，你必须遵守诺言。”多萝西坚定地说。

The Lion roared quite suddenly because he thought that this might be a good time to frighten the Wizard

狮子突然大吼了一声，因为他觉得这可能是吓唬巫师的好时机。

Toto was so startled by the roar that he jumped out of Dorothy's arms and darted behind a curtain

托托被吼声吓了一大跳，从多萝西怀里跳出来，窜到了帘子后面。

The curtain fell open, revealing an old man with a bald head and a wrinkled face

帘子掉下来打开了，露出一个秃头、满脸皱纹的老人。

" Who are you?" asked the Tin Man with his ax raised

“你是谁？”铁皮人举起斧头问道。

旁白 neutral

" I... I am Oz," said the man, trembling." Don't strike me."

“我……我是奥兹，”那人颤抖着说，“别打我。”

" You are not the Wizard I saw," said Dorothy

“你不是我见到的那个巫师。”多萝西说。

旁白 neutral

" I... I was just pretending," he said

“我……我只是假装的。”他说。

Oz showed Dorothy and the others how he had fooled them

奥兹向多萝西他们展示了他是怎么骗过大家的。

Oz had used ropes to make images appear and disappear and mirrors to make things appear bigger and smaller

奥兹用绳子让影像出现和消失，用镜子让东西显得忽大忽小。

Speakers made his voice sound as if it was coming from all around the room

扬声器让他的声音听起来好像从房间四面八方传来。

Oz also told them how he had come to the Emerald City

奥兹还讲了他来到翡翠城的经过。

" Many years ago I was a balloonist," he said

“很多年前，我是个热气球驾驶员，”他说。

" For two days and two nights I could not land my balloon

“两天两夜，我都没法让气球降落。

On the morning of the third day, the balloon floated over a strange and beautiful country

第三天早上，气球飘到了一片陌生而美丽的国土上空。

The people below saw me come out of the clouds, and they thought I was a wizard

下面的人看见我从云里出来，就以为我是巫师。

So when I landed, I just let them go on thinking that's what I was — a wizard."

" I think you are a very bad man!" Dorothy scolded him

" I am not a bad man, just a bad wizard," said Oz sadly

" It's true I tricked the people into believing I was a wizard, but I have ruled them well."

" What about my brain?" asked the Scarecrow

" I can't give you something you already have," said Oz

" Experience will bring you knowledge."

“经验会带给你知识。”

" That may be true, but I still want you to keep your promise," said the Scarecrow

" Yes, I want my courage," demanded the Lion

" You have it already," answered Oz

" But I still feel scared," replied the Lion

" And I want my heart," interrupted the Tin Man

“我还要我的心，”铁皮人插话道。

" A heart will only make you unhappy," said Oz

“一颗心只会让你不快乐，”奥兹说。

" I want to go home," said Dorothy

“我想回家，”多萝西说。

Oz looked at each of them and said," I have pretended to be a wizard for this long

奥兹看着他们每个人说：“我假装是巫师已经这么久了。

I guess I can pretend to be a wizard for a little bit longer

我想我可以再假装一会儿巫师。

旁白 neutral

Come back tomorrow. I will give the Scarecrow a brain;

明天再来。我会给稻草人一个脑子；

I will give the Lion courage; and I will give the Tin Man a heart."

我会给狮子勇气；我会给铁皮人一颗心。”

" What about Dorothy?" asked Dorothy's friends

“那多萝西呢？”多萝西的朋友们问。

" I shall have to think about that," answered Oz

“我得考虑考虑，”奥兹回答。

" I must think of a way to travel over the Great Desert

“我必须想个办法穿越大沙漠。

旁白 neutral

I will think of something, but each of you must promise to keep my secret."

我会想出办法的，但你们每个人都得答应保守我的秘密。”

They all agreed
