Almost six hundred years ago, there was a terrible storm in a city called Chiang Mai

大约六百年前，一个叫清迈的城市遭遇了一场可怕的暴风雨。

It happened in 1434. Even though there was a strong wind, loud thunder, and deep puddles of rain, the people of Chiang Mai were not afraid

那是在1434年。尽管狂风呼啸、雷声隆隆、雨水积成深潭，清迈的人们并不害怕。

They were used to storms

Outside the city was a small temple

城外有一座小寺庙。

There was a monk who lived at this temple and took care of the statues of Buddha

有位僧人住在这座寺庙里，照料着佛像。

Whenever storms came, the monk would protect the incense so it didn't get wet

每当暴风雨来临，僧人就会保护香火，不让它被淋湿。

He wanted the incense to burn for Buddha

他想让香火为佛陀而燃。

After cleaning the temple, the monk stood in the doorway to watch the storm

打扫完寺庙后，僧人站在门口望着这场暴风雨。

The lightning stretched its fingers across the sky

闪电伸开手指划过天空。

The storm was coming closer to the temple

暴风雨离寺庙越来越近了。

Just then, the monk saw a flash and heard a large crack!

就在这时，僧人看到一道闪光，听到一声巨响！

The lightning struck a chedi outside the temple and broke it

闪电击中了寺庙外的一座佛塔，把它劈坏了。

A chedi is a bell-shaped pagoda

佛塔是一座钟形的宝塔。

The first chedis contained the ashes of the Buddha and all chedis are sacred to his memory

最早的佛塔珍藏着佛陀的舍利，所有的佛塔都因纪念佛陀而显得神圣。

The monk ran out into the rain

僧人冲进了雨中。

He wanted to protect the memory of Buddha preserved in the broken chedi

他想保护破碎佛塔里留存的佛陀的纪念。

The monk found an object on the ground, among the stone pieces from the broken chedi

僧人在破碎佛塔的碎石块间，在地上发现了一件物品。

He wrapped the object in his robes and carried it into the temple

他用袍子包好那件物品，把它带回了殿内。

He lit a candle to see what it was

他点燃一支蜡烛，想看看那是什么。

It looked like a statue of Buddha made out of rock

那看起来像是一尊用岩石做成的佛像。

Because the statue was small, and it did not look valuable, the monk put the statue in his house

因为这尊佛像很小，看起来也不贵重，僧人就把它放在了屋里。

Every day he would clean this statue of Buddha and pray to it

他每天都会清理这尊佛像，向它祈祷。

The monk took care of the statue for many years

这位僧人悉心照料这尊佛像很多年。

But one day, when he was cleaning the statue, the nose fell off

但有一天，当他清理佛像时，鼻子掉了下来。

" Oh no!" the monk cried. Then he looked again

“哦，不！”僧人喊道。然后他又看了一眼。

There was another nose underneath, and it was green!

下面有另一个鼻子，而且是绿色的！

The monk carefully began to pull away the rock

僧人小心地开始剥掉岩石外层。

Underneath was a second Buddha made of jade

里面是第二尊佛像，用翡翠做成。

The green was such a beautiful green that he named the statue The Emerald Buddha

那绿色美极了，于是他把这尊佛像命名为“玉佛”。

The monk sent a letter to the king, telling him the story of the Emerald Buddha

僧人给国王写了一封信，讲述了玉佛的故事。

King Samfangkaen was excited

Samfangkaen 国王十分激动。

He asked for the statue to be sent to his palace in Chiang Mai

他要求把佛像送到他在清迈的宫殿。

The monk was sad to see the Emerald Buddha go

僧人看到玉佛离去，很是难过。

He put it on an elephant and sent it to Chiang Mai

他把玉佛放在一匹大象背上，送往清迈。

But when the elephant got to the road, it would not go to Chiang Mai

但大象走到路上后，却不肯去清迈。

This made the king angry, so he sent another elephant

这让国王很生气，于是他又派了另一匹大象。

This elephant would not go to Chiang Mai either

这匹大象也不肯去清迈。

The king was very angry, so he sent a third elephant

国王非常生气，于是派了第三匹大象。

This elephant did exactly what the first two had done

这匹大象的表现，跟前两匹一模一样。

The king thought," Maybe the Emerald Buddha doesn't want to leave," so he stopped sending elephants

国王心想：“也许玉佛不想离开，”于是他不再派大象来了。

The jade statue of Buddha stayed with the monk for 32 more years

这尊翡翠佛像又在僧人身边留了三十二年。

Today the Emerald Buddha is kept in a temple called Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok, Thailand

如今，玉佛供奉在泰国曼谷一座名为玉佛寺的庙宇里。

Three times a year there is a special ceremony when the king changes the clothes of the Emerald Buddha

每年有三次特别的仪式，由国王为玉佛更换法衣。
