" Zann! Is that really you?"

“赞恩！真的是你吗？”

Zann turned. A teenage girl he'd never seen before was rushing toward him, grinning widely

赞恩转过身。一个他从未见过的少女正朝他跑来，咧嘴笑着。

" Uh-oh," Perda whispered." It's another fan!"

“哎呀，”珀达小声说，“又是一个粉丝！”

" Perda!" the girl exclaimed. She noticed Zann's pet dragon sniffing at a beetle nearby

“珀达！”女孩喊道。她注意到赞恩的宠物龙在附近嗅着一只甲虫。

" And Zing! Oh wow — it's an honor to meet you all!"

“还有津！哇哦——见到你们真是太荣幸了！”

The girl rubbed her hands together. Flowers rained down on the street all around them

女孩搓了搓手。花朵如雨般飘落在他们周围的街道上。

" They're beautiful," Perda said politely, catching one of the blossoms." Thank you."

“真漂亮，”珀达礼貌地说，接住一朵花。“谢谢你。”

The girl beamed." No, thank you! You guys saved Magica!"

女孩灿烂地笑了。“不，应该谢谢你们！是你们救了马吉卡！”

A few passing pedestrians stopped to see what was going on

几个过路的行人停下来看发生了什么事。

" Look, son," a man told a little boy." It's Zann and Perda. They're heroes!"

“看，儿子，”一个男人对一个小男孩说。“是赞恩和珀达。他们是英雄！”

Zann forced a smile as the little boy stared up at him

小男孩仰头盯着赞恩，赞恩勉强挤出一个笑容。

It had been less than two days since the grand ceremony celebrating Morb's defeat

距离庆祝击败莫布的盛大典礼，才过了不到两天。

But Zann and his friends were already getting used to attracting attention everywhere they went

但赞恩和他的朋友们，已经慢慢习惯了走到哪儿都引人注目。

Still, Zann felt a little uncomfortable whenever someone called him a hero

不过，每当有人叫他英雄，赞恩还是觉得有点不自在。

" We just did what we had to do," he mumbled

“我们只是做了该做的事，”他咕哝道。

Several people chuckled or clapped their hands to create puffs of colorful magic energy or pretty sparkles

有几个人轻声笑着，或是拍了拍手，变出一团团彩色魔法能量，或是漂亮的闪光。

Zann wondered what his fans would think if they knew he sometimes still thought about Morb's offer

赞恩心想，要是他的崇拜者们知道，他有时还会想起莫布的提议，他们会怎么想。

Zann knew he'd done the right thing by refusing the offer — if he hadn't, Morb would now control Magica

赞恩知道，拒绝那个提议是正确的——要是他没拒绝，现在马吉卡就是莫布的了。

But Zann still couldn't help wondering... Did Morb really know where Zann's parents were?

可赞恩还是忍不住琢磨……莫布真的知道赞恩的父母在哪里吗？

By now a small crowd had gathered around Zann and Perda

这时，一小群人已经聚在了赞恩和珀达周围。

Thinking about Morb's offer had reminded Zann of today's errand

想起莫布的提议，让赞恩记起了今天的差事。

" Excuse us," he said." We have to get going."

“不好意思，”他说，“我们得走了。”

" Of course, of course." An older woman beamed at him

“当然，当然。”一位年长的妇人对他笑容满面。

" I'm sure heroes like you have lots of important things to do."

“像你这样的英雄，肯定有很多重要的事要做。”

Zann smiled weakly and then hurried off. Perda and Zing followed

赞恩勉强笑了笑，然后匆匆离去。珀达和信使跟了上去。

" Slow down!" Perda complained as they raced around a corner

“慢点儿！”拐过街角时，珀达抱怨道。

" Otherwise I'll have to use an Acceleration spell to keep up!"

“不然我就得用加速咒语才能跟上了！”

" Sorry." Zann slowed his pace slightly." But there's no time to waste

“对不起。”赞恩稍稍放慢了脚步。“但没时间可浪费了。

Who knows how much longer we'll get to stay in First City?"

谁知道我们还能在第一城待多久？”

Perda made a face at the mention of leaving

一提到离开，珀达就做了个鬼脸。

" We're lucky the king and queen asked Boz and Gliss' parents to stay for a few days

“多亏国王和王后让博兹和格莉丝的父母多留几天，

Otherwise we'd already be back to our regular lives in boring old Swamp Bottom."

不然我们早就回到无聊的沼泽底，过回老日子了。”

" Yeah." Zann was a little surprised by Perda's words

“是啊。” 赞恩对珀达的话有点意外。

Before their adventures had started, Perda seemed content to live in Swamp Bottom

在他们的冒险开始之前，珀达似乎还挺满足于住在沼泽底的。

Zann was the one who had always complained about how boring the town was

赞恩才是那个总抱怨镇子多无聊的人。

They passed a wall on which someone had scribbled " Voids are Magicians too!" in large letters

他们路过一面墙，上面有人用大字潦草地写着“虚空人也是魔法师！”。

Perda glanced at the graffiti." Looks like the Void Rights group has been here," she commented

珀达瞥了一眼涂鸦。“看来虚空权利组织来过这儿了，”她评论道。

" At least their messages are polite. Some of the ones from the new anti-Red groups are pretty rude."

“至少他们的标语还算客气。有些新出现的反红组织写的那些，可是相当粗鲁。”

Zann nodded, but he wasn't really listening. They'd just reached the university

赞恩点点头，但他并没真的在听。他们刚刚到了大学。

" My parents' old lab is this way," he told Perda

“我父母的旧实验室在这边，”他对珀达说。

A young woman looked up when they entered the building

他们走进大楼时，一位年轻女子抬起头来。

A nameplate on her desk said " Elbi."

她桌上的名牌写着“艾尔碧”。

" Oh! It's two of the young heroes!" she exclaimed

“哦！是那两位少年英雄！”她惊呼道。

Zing spurted out a small blast of flame

小星突然喷出一小团火焰。

Elbi yanked a potted melody plant out of the way just in time to keep it from getting singed

艾尔碧及时拉开一盆旋律植物，才没让它被烧焦。

" And the dragon." Elbi narrowed her eyes at Zing and frowned

“还有那条龙。”艾尔碧眯起眼睛看着小星，皱起了眉头。

" Hi," Zann said." My parents used to run this lab

“你好，”赞恩说，“我父母以前经营过这个实验室。

Their names are Nax and Asta. Did you know them?"

他们叫纳克斯和阿丝塔。你认识他们吗？”

" Sorry, no." Elbi shrugged." I've heard of them, of course, but I only started working here two years ago."

" Oh. Well, is Olpa around?"

“哦。那，欧帕在吗？”

" No. Olpa and the other senior researchers are all at some big meeting at the palace

I'm not sure when they'll be back. Should I tell Olpa you were here?"

Zann was disappointed." Are you sure there's nobody here who knew my parents?"

Elbi looked sympathetic." Sorry. But listen, I have an idea

艾尔碧一脸同情。“抱歉。不过听着，我有个主意。

Would you like to see their storage shelf?" She stood up

想看看他们的储物架吗？”她站了起来。

" When your parents disappeared, someone put their things there for safekeeping."

“你父母失踪的时候，有人把他们的东西放在那里保管。”

" That would be great!" Zann felt a surge of hope

“那太好了！”赞恩心中涌起一阵希望。

Could there be clues to his parents' whereabouts on that shelf?

Elbi led the way through the lab

艾尔碧领着他们穿过实验室。

Being back there after so long felt strange to Zann

Many things looked the same, but others looked very different. Only a few people were in the main room

A couple of university students were reading near the bookshelves

A Void was cleaning a nibbler's cage

A young researcher was studying a bubbling beaker and scribbling notes

" Wow, this place is cool!" Perda whispered to Zann, looking around with wide eyes

“哇，这地方真酷！”珀达睁大眼睛环顾四周，小声对赞恩说。

" It must be amazing to work here!"

“能在这里工作一定很棒！”

" Yeah, I guess," said Zann, distracted

“嗯，也许吧，”赞恩心不在焉地说。

He followed Elbi as she opened a closet door

他跟着艾尔碧，看她打开一扇壁橱门。

" It's the middle shelf in the back," Elbi said, rubbing her fingers together to create a light

“在后面，中间那层架子，”艾尔碧边说边搓动手指，变出一团光亮。

As soon as Zann saw the shelf, he was flooded with memories

赞恩一看到那个架子，回忆便涌上心头。

There was his mother's favorite hair clip. His father's lab coat

有他妈妈最爱的发夹。还有他爸爸的实验服。

Even a dragon-shaped paperweight that Zann had given his parents as a gift

甚至还有赞恩送给父母的礼物——一个龙形镇纸。

" What's this?" Perda picked up a large metal sculpture

“这是什么？”珀达拿起一个很大的金属雕塑。

It was so blackened by fire that the edges were crumbling away

它被火烧得焦黑，边缘都已剥落。

" I don't know," Zann said." I've never seen it before."

" It looks kind of like Teplo's pet sniffer goose, doesn't it?" Perda said

“它看着有点像特普洛的宠物嗅探鹅，对吧？”珀达说。

Before Zann could answer, there was an enormous explosion from somewhere in the city

赞恩还没来得及回答，城中某处传来一声巨大的爆炸。

The building shook, causing some books to fall from the bookshelf. Everyone shouted in surprise

建筑震动起来，书架上的书掉下来几本。所有人都惊叫出声。

Zann froze, immediately thinking of Morb and the evil Void's final words: Magica hasn't seen the last of me!

赞恩僵住了，他立刻想起了莫布，还有那个邪恶虚空族最后的话：马吉卡还没见识完我的厉害呢！
