It was darker than usual, with fewer swirling lights

A deafening roar made Perda wish she could cover her ears

But she was using both hands to cling onto Zann's arm because

they seemed to be tumbling faster than ever before.

" Hold on!" Zann yelled over the noise." I'll try to grab a wormhole."

Perda looked around." Where?" she cried." There are hardly any wormholes here!"

For the first time, she felt a twinge of panic

Normally there were lots of wormholes in the vortex

The only tricky part was finding the one you wanted — or at least not

accidentally pulling yourself out into a scary, dangerous world.

But now a wormhole passed by only once every few minutes

" There's one!" she yelled

" Got it!" Zann had managed to wrap Zing's leash around his waist

so he used both hands to grab at the edge of the wormhole.

Perda grabbed it too. She saw a steep mountainside

covered with dark, dripping trees.

The sky was dark, and jagged flashes of lightning lit up the scene

every few seconds, glaring off the craggy cliffs overhead.

" Weird," she commented." This wormhole is in the ground too."

“奇怪，”她评论道，“这个虫洞也在地上啊。”

" Never mind that," Zann said." Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

“先别管那个，”赞恩说，“你想的是不是和我想的一样？”

Perda nodded." That looks a lot like Fardark," she said with a shudder

佩达点点头。“那地方看起来很像法尔达克，”她哆嗦着说。

They'd visited the terrifying world a couple of times and barely escaped alive

他们去过那个可怕的世界好几次，每次都是死里逃生。

It was home to nothing but horrible, violent creatures who wished

to harm any traveler unlucky enough to end up there.

" I never saw mountains like this in Fardark though," Zann said

" And those trees look like some I've seen in Magica

Maybe it's not Fardark after all."

" It's not worth the risk," Perda said

" We'll try the next world. But first, let's make sure we don't lose each other."

“我们试试下一个世界吧。不过首先，确保我们不会走散。”

She rubbed her fingers together to create friction. Then she

touched Zann's arm. "Shackle," she said.

Magical shackles appeared, binding them together. Zann quickly

shackled himself to Zing as well.

They let go and tumbled on through the strange, noisy vortex

他们放开手，继续在奇怪、嘈杂的漩涡中翻滚前行。

For a long moment, they didn't pass any wormholes

and Perda felt panic creep through her again.

Finally a glowing wormhole appeared up ahead

Once again Zann grabbed the edge with both hands and

managed to pull himself and Perda halfway through.

They paused and looked around

This time the world before them was rocky and charred, with almost no foliage

Then there was a screech of fury, and an enormous purple dragon flew into view

A second, bright red dragon was pursuing it

It was spitting fireballs as the first dragon dodged to try to avoid them

The purple dragon screamed in pain as a fireball hit it in the back of the head

The dragon spun around and leaped toward the other dragon

with deadly claws extended.

The two huge creatures were locked in battle

They tumbled to the hard ground with a thump that nearly

shook loose Perda's grip on the wormhole.

" Oh, no," she said, her heart sinking as she realized

where they must be. "I think . . . this is Drac!"

Zann looked pale. Drac was another dangerous world they'd barely escaped

There, dragons were the dominant species. They treated

humans as servants—and sometimes as food.

Zing was peering out through the wormhole. He shot out

a puff of smoke in the direction of the dragons.

" That red dragon looks like a much larger version of Zing," Perda thought

" Maybe it's a type of fire whistler." She liked Zing just fine

but he could be a little destructive.

That's why Zann was one of the few people in Magica who

chose to keep a fire whistler as a pet.

She couldn't even imagine what kind of damage a huge

version of Zing could do!

" Let's get out of here before they notice us," Zann said as the wrestling

dragons rolled closer to the wormhole.

旁白 neutral

Once again he and Perda let go and continued through the vortex

他和佩达再次松开彼此，继续在漩涡中前进。

" We've got to find a place to stop and rest soon," Zann said

“我们得赶紧找个地方停下来休息，”赞恩说。

Perda realized he was right

Already she could feel the last bits of magic energy ebbing from her body

That was weird. Traveling through the vortex always used a lot of energy

But she'd never lost this much energy this quickly before

" We have to stop at the next world, no matter what," she said

as another wormhole appeared up ahead.

" Yeah," Zann agreed, sounding tired." At least we already

found the two scariest worlds possible."

" Not quite," Perda said." What about that world we found with no magic at all?"

“还不算，”佩达说。“我们找到的那个完全没有魔法的世界呢？”

She shuddered just thinking about it

That world had been full of interesting sights, smells, and people

But there was no natural magic energy there at all

Perda and her friends were helpless to do even the simplest things

like create food or zap from place to place.

Plus, since magic energy was required to open a wormhole

they'd almost been trapped there forever!

" What are the odds we'd end up there again?" Zann said

He grabbed the next wormhole as it swirled past

Perda pulled herself up beside him to take a look

" At least the sun is shining here," Zann said, glancing around

Perda nodded. The land before them was drab and barren

with wispy, brownish grass covering a flat plain.

A few boulders and prickly shrubs were the only

other things breaking up the boring scene.

" This doesn't look like a very exciting world," she said

“这个世界看起来不怎么有趣，”她说。

" But I suppose it's a safe place to rest and figure out

how to get back to Magica."

" I agree," Zann said." Let's go!"
