A short while later, the brothers had finished the painting

Ben stood back to admire their handiwork

growing up it. I hope Victoria likes it."

Ben put the garden tools and paint supplies in the wheelbarrow

and headed for the storage shed.

He was thinking about ideas for thanking the other Green Club

members for their help when he heard Sid shouting.

Ben raced out of the shed, expecting to find Sid in the middle

of another disaster.

" What's the matter now?" Ben called

But then he realized that Sid wasn't calling for help — he was shouting with joy

" Good, my plan worked!" Uncle Bert laughed as he hugged Ben

" This is the best thing that's happened all day," Sid said

" Oh no," Uncle Bert said." Why? What happened?"

" What hasn't happened?" Ben sighed." The garden is a mess."

Uncle Bert gazed around

" It doesn't look too bad," he said encouragingly

" That's a nice piranha pond you dug

And that field of black-and-orange flowers is ghastly!"

Ben grinned, pleased by the compliment

" I guess it's not too bad after all," he thought," now that

the ground creeper vines aren't going crazy anymore."

" What about the archway?" Uncle Bert asked." Were you able to build it?"

" Yep." Ben pointed to the archway

" Sid and I just painted it

When it's dry, we can train the bruised blue roses to climb up it."

" This is great, Ben!" Uncle Bert beamed." Can I see the roses too?"

" Sure. I just checked on them a little while ago," Ben said

as he led Uncle Bert across the garden.

" They're looking pretty good."

" Yeah," Sid chimed in

" Good thing the ground creeper vines didn't choke those nice roses!"

" What do you mean?" Uncle Bert asked

" Uh... nothing!" Ben said quickly

" The roses are right over here

Don't they look — " His jaw fell open

它们看起来难道不——”他惊得张大了嘴。

The rosebushes were covered in empty stems

玫瑰丛上挂满了光秃秃的枝干。

All of the bruised blue buds and spiky thorns were gone!

" They look a little..." Uncle Bert paused to search for the right word

" Eaten!" Sid said." They look eaten."

" I can't believe this... Oh," Ben moaned

" I checked on them just a little while ago

The buds were beginning to bloom, and the thorns

were getting nice and sharp."

good too," Uncle Bert said.

" Good enough to eat, that is." He laughed nervously at his own joke

There's a new monster pizza place downtown. We can check it out."

Ben flashed a thumbs-up, but Uncle Bert was wrong

Nothing would cheer up Ben but getting the garden done in time for the wedding
