旁白 neutral

On Saturday morning, as Ben and Sid floated to school to work

on the garden, Ben handed Sid a book.

旁白 neutral

Sid read the title on the cover."'Scaring for Beginners'?"

" Uncle Bert gave it to me when I was studying for my test," Ben said

" Did it help?" Sid asked

旁白 neutral

" Um, yeah," Ben lied

He'd never actually read it, but he was running out of both

ideas and time for helping Sid.

旁白 neutral

" Whenever we don't need you in the garden, just find

a quiet spot to sit and read."

旁白 neutral

Sid looked confused." What about my scaring lesson

with Gaby? We never got to finish yesterday."

旁白 neutral

" She has to focus on getting the garden ready today

The archway isn't even done yet, and we wanted to make a path

for the wedding aisle. Read the book. It should help you."

旁白 neutral

By the time Ben and Sid got to the garden, the rest of the Green Club

members were already there working.

旁白 neutral

Ben stopped to look at his friends for a moment." Wow," he thought

They were giving up their weekend to work in the garden

so it would be ready for the wedding.

旁白 neutral

" I'll find a way to thank them," Ben thought

"As soon as the garden is finished."

旁白 neutral

A few hours later, Ben and the zombies had finally

finished painting the archway.

旁白 neutral

" That took a long time," a zombie complained

Ben rolled his eyes." That's because you two kept

drooling in the paint!"

旁白 neutral

Just as they'd cleaned up the paint supplies

a loud clap of thunder exploded.

旁白 neutral

Then raindrops began falling

" Everyone inside!" Ben shouted

The Green Club monsters dropped their garden tools

and raced inside for cover.

旁白 neutral

As the dripping wet monsters filed into the cafeteria

Ben checked the weather on his phone.

旁白 neutral

" The forecast says it might rain until evening," Ben said

"So I guess we're done for today."

旁白 neutral

Jen looked over his shoulder at the forecast

" Looks like tomorrow will be sunny. We can work all day."

" You'd do that?" Ben asked, touched again

by his friends' dedication.

旁白 neutral

" Give up another weekend day?"

" Of course! The wedding is only a week away,"

Mog said. "See you tomorrow."

旁白 neutral

Winnie and Waldo stayed behind while the others left

" We'll wait for the rain to let up," Winnie said

" Then we can help you clean up outside."

" I can do it — you guys should go home," Ben said

" We want to help," Waldo said

" Thanks," Ben said." You two are the best."

Winnie spotted Sid sitting at the end of a table

"What are you reading, Sid?"

旁白 neutral

Sid showed her the cover of the book

" Is it helpful?" Winnie asked

" A little." Sid shrugged

" But I still have to practice scaring before

my test. I can't just read about it."

旁白 neutral

" How about this. When you're ready, you can

practice on me!" Winnie said.

旁白 neutral

Sid brightened." That would be great!"

" Guess what?" Gaby came running back into the cafeteria

" The rain stopped, and it looks like the sun's coming back out!"

" Great," Ben said." Let's go!"

Everyone headed outside

As soon as they saw the garden, they all stopped dead in their tracks

" Whoa!" Sid gasped." It looks like a jungle out here!"

" The vines have gone crazy!" Gaby cried

Ben couldn't believe his eyes

The entire garden was covered in vines!

Ground creeper vines had crawled over the archway, across the field

of black-and-orange flowers, and on top of the piranha pond.

旁白 neutral

And now they were creeping toward the back of the school building!

They ran closer to get a better look at the vines

" Yikes," Winnie said." How did this happen?"

They all spun toward Waldo

" Don't look at me!" Waldo said

" It's a powerful fertilizer, but I was really careful

to use exactly the right amount."

旁白 neutral

" It's my fault!" Ben moaned

" I was worried that the vines weren't growing fast enough

so I added more fertilizer."

旁白 neutral

" What?" Waldo cried

" How much more?" Gaby picked up the empty bottle

of fertilizer from the ground.

旁白 neutral

" Just a little," Ben confessed

" But I dropped the bottle when you called me over

I thought it was empty, but there must have

been some fertilizer left.

旁白 neutral

It spilled onto the vines."

" I bet the rain made it go crazy," Waldo said

Winnie picked up a pair of garden trimmers

" There's only one thing to do — start trimming."

" No." Ben took the trimmers from her with a sigh

" I made the big mess, so I'll fix it myself

Besides, there's only one pair of trimmers."

Winnie nodded and gave Ben a quick hug

" It'll be okay. We've still got another week."

Ben just sighed and got to work cutting back the vines
