Once upon a time, there was a big farm

On this farm lived a donkey, a lapdog, and their master

" The dog does nothing but the farmer still loves him

Of course, the donkey had a warm stable to sleep in

He had lots of food to eat and water to drink

The farmer made sure the donkey was as comfortable as any other donkey

" Then the farmer will love me as much as he loves the dog."

The donkey ran into his master's house

驴子冲进了主人的屋子。

He tried to remember what the dog did

The donkey tried to chase his tail like the dog

驴子试着像狗那样追自己的尾巴。

Then he jumped up and down like the dog

接着又像狗那样上蹿下跳。

" Where is the farmer?" wondered the donkey

“农夫在哪儿呢？”驴子心想。

" No, no... no!" shouted the farmer

“不，不……不！”农夫大叫起来。

The donkey jumped up and landed on the farmer's lap

驴子跳起来，落到了农夫的腿上。

Then he licked the farmer's face, just like the dog

然后他舔着农夫的脸，就像那条狗一样。

The donkey waited for the farmer to pet him on the head or give him a special treat

驴子等着农夫摸摸他的头，或是给他点特别的奖励。

But instead of a treat, the donkey got a big surprise

" What a crazy donkey!"

shouted the farmer, as he smacked the donkey on its head

From that day on, the farmer made the donkey work harder and harder

" I'm so miserable," cried the donkey

“我好惨啊，”驴子哭喊道。

" Why did I ever want to be like the dog?" he wailed

“我当初为什么非要学狗那样？”他哀号道。

It is better to be happy with what you have than to take something you are not fit to receive
