Dickon pushed Colin's wheelchair until they came to a spot in the garden filled with flowering trees

迪肯推着科林的轮椅，来到花园里一处开满花的树林。

Mary and Dickon worked here and there as Colin watched

玛丽和迪肯四处忙碌，科林在一旁看着。

They brought him things to look at: green buds on a twig, a woodpecker's feather, the empty shell of a bird that had hatched

他们拿东西给他看：一根树枝上的绿芽、一根啄木鸟的羽毛、一个孵出小鸟后留下的空壳。

Then Dickon pushed him slowly around the garden

" I wonder if we'll see the robin," said Colin

“不知道能不能看到那只知更鸟。”科林说。

" Oh, you'll see him soon enough," said Dickon

" When the eggs hatch, he'll be busy bringing worms to his family."

Dickon pulled out his pipe

Before he could begin to play, Colin noticed something

" That's a very old tree over there."

" Yes," Dickon said quietly. He glanced at Mary

“是的。”迪肯轻声说。他瞥了玛丽一眼。

" It looks as if a big branch broke off," said Colin

“看起来好像有一根大树枝折断了。”科林说。

" I wonder how that happened."

“真不知道那怎么会发生的。”

" It broke a long time ago," said Dickon." Oh, look, here's the robin."

Colin laughed as he watched the bird flying around

He forgot all about the tree

When they talked about it later, Mary told Dickon it was magic that the robin had appeared just then

They hadn't wanted to tell Colin about the horrible accident

" Mother thinks Colin's mother sometimes comes back to watch over him," Dickon had said

" Perhaps she set us to work and told us to bring him here."

Mary wondered whether this could be true

There was no question, however, that being in the garden was doing Colin good

He was still gazing around in wonder

" I'll watch everything grow here," he announced," and I'll grow too."

Both Dickon and Mary breathed a sigh of relief

" When you stop being afraid," said Dickon," then you'll stand

They all sat quietly for a while. The sun was dropping lower

They turned around. There was Ben Weatherstaff glaring at them from the top of a ladder

He shook his fist at Mary

" I've never liked you!" he shouted

“我从来就不曾喜欢你！”他吼道。

" You're always poking your nose where it's not wanted

“你总是在不该你瞎打听的地方多管闲事。

If it hadn't been for that robin..."

若不是因为那只知更鸟……”

" Ben Weatherstaff!" Mary stood below him

“本·韦瑟斯塔夫！”玛丽站在他下方。

" It was the robin who showed me the way."

“是那只知更鸟给我指的路。”

At this the old gardener seemed so outraged that Mary thought he was going to scramble down on her side of the wall

" You're a bad one. Blaming the robin for what you did."

While Ben kept scolding, Colin whispered to Dickon." Wheel me over there."

Ben's mouth dropped open at the sight of Colin

一看到科林，本惊得嘴巴张得老大。

" Do you know who I am?" demanded Colin

"你知道我是谁吗？"科林问道。

Ben stared at the boy in the wheelchair

本盯着轮椅上的男孩。

He passed his hands over his eyes, and when he answered, it was in a shaky voice

他用手揉了揉眼睛，回答时声音发颤。

" Know who you are? With your mother's eyes staring out of your face?

"知道你是谁？你脸上那双眼睛跟你母亲一模一样，

Of course I know who you are

我当然知道你是谁。

You're that poor sick boy with the crooked back and legs."

你就是那个驼背瘸腿的可怜病孩子。"

Colin turned bright red and sat up straight

科林脸涨得通红，一下子坐直了身子。

" I don't have a crooked back and legs."

"我没有驼背，腿也不瘸。"

" He doesn't!" said Mary angrily

"他没有！"玛丽生气地说。

" I've looked, and he doesn't have any lumps on his back."

"我看过了，他背上没有肿块。"

Ben kept staring at Colin

本继续盯着科林看。

" You don't have a crooked back? You don't have crooked legs?"

"你没有驼背？你没有瘸腿？"

This was too much for Colin

科林再也忍不住了。

The energy that he usually threw into his tantrums rushed through him in a new way

平时用来发脾气的劲儿，此刻以新的方式涌遍全身。

His anger and insulted pride filled him with strength

愤怒和受辱的自尊心给了他力量。

" Stand by my side!" he ordered Dickon, throwing the blankets off his legs

Dickon held Colin's arm as Colin put his feet on the ground

科林把脚放到地上时，迪肯扶住了他的胳膊。

" He can do it!" Mary whispered

Then Colin was standing as straight as an arrow

接着科林站得笔直。

" Look at me!" he said to Ben." Just you look at me!"

" He's as straight as I am," said Dickon

Mary couldn't believe what Ben did next

He choked and gulped, and tears ran down his cheeks

他哽咽着，泪水顺着脸颊流下。

" When my father is away," said Colin," I am your master, and you must obey me

"我父亲不在时，"科林说，"我就是你的主人，你必须听我的。

This is my garden. Don't you dare say a word about it

Get down from that ladder at once. Mary will meet you and bring you to us."

马上从梯子上下来。玛丽会来接你，带你过来。"

" Yes, sir!" said Ben, and he climbed down the ladder

"是，少爷！"本说着，爬下了梯子。
