" The Beast of the Otherworld?" Zann echoed." What's that?"

“异界的野兽？”赞重复道。“那是什么？”

He didn't recognize the creature from his parents' books

他从未在父母的书里见过这种生物。

And he was sure he'd remember something that looked like that!

而且他敢肯定，要是见过长得这么可怕的东西，他一定会记住！

" It's the most horrible beast in all the worlds." Wyssa shuddered

“这是所有世界中最可怕的野兽。”薇莎打了个寒颤。

" How was Morb able to transport it from its home on Narakan?"

“莫布是怎么把它从纳拉坎的老家运过来的？”

旁白 neutral

" Narakan?" Venna sounded startled." I thought that world was only a myth."

“纳拉坎？”维娜的声音里带着吃惊。“我以为那个世界只是神话。”

" Apparently not," Wyssa said. The creature hissed, and a dark, viscous substance dripped from its jaws and sizzled on the stone bridge

“看来不是那样。”薇莎说。那生物发出嘶嘶声，一股暗色黏稠的液体从它下颌滴落，在石桥上嗞嗞作响。

" How big is that thing, anyway?" Perda cried as the enormous head rose even higher

“那东西到底有多大啊？”佩达喊道，那巨大的头颅抬得更高了。

" Big!" Zann answered." And it doesn't seem to be in a good mood either!"

“很大！”赞答道。“而且它看起来心情可不好！”

The Beast let out a hoarse, echoing cry

野兽发出一声嘶哑、回荡的吼叫。

Then its head snaked toward Zann and the others

然后它的头猛地探向赞和其他人。

" Run!" Venna shouted

“快跑！”薇莎喊道。

旁白 neutral

The humans scattered. Zann lunged toward the gate and skidded across the rough stone on his hands and knees

人们四散奔逃。赞冲向大门，双手和膝盖在粗糙的石头上打着滑。

When he glanced back, the Beast was raising its head again

他回头一瞥，看到野兽再次抬高了头。

Zann noticed that the dark goo wasn't coming from its mouth after all

赞发现，那黑色的黏液根本不是从它嘴里流出来的。

It was oozing out of its head

而是从它头顶渗出来的。

" Look out!" Gliss screamed." It's going to strike again!"

“小心！”格丽丝尖叫起来，“它又要攻击了！”

Spurting angry flames, Zing flew toward the Beast

星仔喷吐着愤怒的火焰，飞向野兽。

" Zing, no!" Zann shouted." It's going to eat you!"

“星仔，别去！”赞喊道，“它会吃了你的！”

The Beast snapped at the small dragon. Zing barely escaped

野兽猛地咬向小龙。星仔险些没能逃脱。

" We have to zap away!" Gliss cried, grabbing Darb's hand

“我们必须传送离开！”格莉丝喊道，抓住达布的手。

" No!" Wyssa said." That's the worst thing we can do

“不！”薇莎说，“那是我们最不该做的事。

If the legends are true, the Beast can catch hold of Transport spells and pull its victims back — straight into its jaws."

如果传说是真的，那头野兽能抓住传送咒，把牺牲者拖回来——直接拖进它的嘴里。”

" So we're trapped?" Perda snapped her fingers, and a sword appeared in her hand." Then we'll have to fight."

“所以我们被困住了？”佩达打了个响指，手里出现一把剑。“那我们就必须战斗。”

Zann stared at her for a second. When had Perda become so brave?

赞盯着她看了一会儿。佩达什么时候变得这么勇敢了？

He couldn't imagine any other kid his age facing down a monster so calmly

他无法想象其他同龄孩子能如此冷静地面对怪物。

But this was no time to think about such things

但现在不是想这些的时候。

Rubbing his hands together, Zann conjured his own sword

赞搓搓双手，变出了自己的剑。

" Stand back, kids," Venna called." I'm going to blast it."

“孩子们，退后，”维娜喊道，“我要轰击它。”

" Wait," Wyssa said." I don't think that will — "

“等等，”薇莎说，“我觉得那不会——”

A bolt of energy shot out of Venna's hands

一道能量箭从维娜手中射出。

It flew straight at the Beast. The Beast opened its giant mouth..

它径直飞向野兽。野兽张开了它的血盆大口……

Gulp!

" Did the Beast just eat the Blast spell?" Gliss cried

“那野兽刚刚是把爆裂咒吃了吗？”格莉丝喊道。

Zann didn't have time to answer as he dodged another sizzling drop of slime

赞没时间回答，他又躲开了一滴滋滋作响的黏液。

He found himself beside Darb, who was still cradling the mibbit

他发现自己来到了达布身边，达布还抱着那只米比特。

旁白 neutral

" The mibbit doesn't seem too worried," Zann commented

“这米比特好像一点儿都不担心。”赞说。

旁白 neutral

Darb nodded." Vee told us the effects of the ear-rubbing would last a few hours, remember?" he said

达布点了点头。“薇莎跟我们说过，揉耳朵的效果会持续几个小时，记得吗？”他说。

" Too bad. I bet the mibbit was the only thing holding the Beast back before."

“太糟了。我敢说，之前能制住那野兽的，就只有这米比特了。”

旁白 neutral

" You're probably right. No wonder the mibbit was tense with that thing around." Zann glanced up." Get back!"

“你说得对。难怪米比特在它附近会那么紧张。”赞抬头看了一眼，“快退后！”

He and Darb leaped away in opposite directions

他和达布朝相反的方向跳开。

The Beast's head slammed down, shaking the whole bridge

野兽的头猛地砸下来，震得整座桥都在晃动。

" Hurry! Run while it's stunned!" Perda shouted

“快！趁它发晕赶紧跑！”佩达喊道。

" Maybe it won't be able to climb out of that pit and chase us."

“也许它没法从那个坑里爬出来追我们。”

旁白 neutral

Zann sprinted for the gate. He was only halfway there when a shimmering wall of magic energy shot up in front of him

赞冲向大门。才跑到一半，一道闪烁的魔法能量墙就突然在他面前竖起。

" What's that?" Venna cried

“那是什么？”维娜喊道。

Zann didn't answer. He lowered his head and ran straight toward the magical wall

赞没有回答。他低下头，直直冲向那面魔法墙。

But he bounced off it and stumbled into Darb

但他被弹了回来，踉跄着撞上了达布。

" Oof," Darb grunted. He fell backward, almost slipping off the edge of the bridge

“哎哟，”达布哼了一声。他向后倒去，差点从桥边滑下去。

To catch himself, he had to drop the mibbit

为了稳住自己，他不得不丢下米比特。

The fuzzy creature landed on its feet and just stood there, flicking its ears lazily

那个毛茸茸的小家伙四脚落地，就那么站着，懒洋洋地抖着耳朵。

" Look out!" Perda yelled." The Beast is coming for you guys!"

“当心！”佩达喊道，“野兽朝你们过来了！”

Zann grabbed Darb and dragged him away from the Beast

赞抓住达布，把他从野兽身边拖开。

The Beast's orange eyes glowed, and another wall of magic energy sprang up inside the first

野兽橙色的眼睛亮了起来，又一道魔法能量墙在第一道墙内升起。

" Why did it make another wall? The first one seemed to be working pretty well." Zann winced, touching his shoulder

“它为什么又造了一堵墙？第一堵看起来挺管用的。”赞皱着眉，摸了摸自己的肩膀。

He would definitely have a bruise to heal later — if he survived this

如果他能活下来的话，之后肯定有一大块淤伤要愈合。

" I think it's herding us back toward itself."

“我觉得它在把我们赶回它那里去。”

Suddenly Perda looked scared." Look! It's drooling."

佩达突然显得很害怕。“看！它在流口水。”

" This is hopeless!" Gliss cried, her voice shaking

“没希望了！”格莉丝喊道，声音在发抖。

" The Beast is going to eat us, and there's nothing we can do about it!"

“野兽要把我们吃掉了，我们一点儿办法也没有！”

Darb grabbed the mibbit." Isn't there anything you can do?" he asked Wyssa and Venna

达布抱起米比特。“你们就没有一点办法吗？”他问薇莎和维娜。

旁白 neutral

Wyssa was peering at the magic walls." Let me think, let me think," she muttered." There must be a way..."

薇莎盯着那些魔法墙。“让我想想，让我想想，”她喃喃道，“一定有办法……”

Zann glanced from Wyssa to his friends

赞的目光从薇莎转向他的朋友们。

Perda and Gliss were clinging to each other, looking terrified

佩达和格莉丝紧紧抱在一起，满脸惊恐。

Zing was hiding behind Venna. Darb, cradling the mibbit, was looking nervously at the Beast

星仔躲在维娜身后。达布抱着米比特，紧张地望着野兽。

The hideous creature was sizing them up, as if deciding whom to eat first

这头丑陋的怪物正打量着他们，仿佛在决定先吃谁。

Suddenly Zann's eyes lit up." I've got it! Everyone run toward the tower!"

突然，赞的眼睛一亮。“我有办法了！大家往塔楼跑！”

" What?" Venna said." Are you crazy?"

“什么？”维娜说，“你疯了吗？”

旁白 neutral

Zann didn't answer; he raced along the bridge toward the tower

赞没有回答，他沿着桥朝塔楼冲去。

Perda caught up to him." Zann, the door is bolted shut!

佩达追上了他。“赞，门是闩死的！

旁白 neutral

And we won't have time to try to open it with a spell. The Beast will have us cornered!"

我们也没时间用咒语开门。野兽会把我们逼到绝路的！”

" Just go." Zann shoved her forward and then turned to make sure the others were following

“只管跑。”赞把她往前一推，然后转身确认其他人跟上了。

Wyssa was the last to run past. She gave Zann a strange look

薇莎是最后一个跑过去的。她异样地看了赞一眼。

" I hope you know what you're doing, boy."

“希望你清楚自己在做什么，小子。”

Zann hoped so too. He glanced at the Beast, which was already gathering itself for another attack

赞也希望如此。他瞥了一眼野兽，它已经在蓄力准备下一次攻击了。

As the huge head snaked toward him, Zann sprinted after the others

当那颗巨大的脑袋蜿蜒向他探来时，赞拼命朝其他人跑去。

He could feel the creature's hot breath on the back of his neck

他能感觉到怪物灼热的鼻息喷在他的后颈上。

A drop of viscous goo landed on his shoulder, burning right through his shirt

一滴黏稠的黏液落在他肩膀上，直接烧穿了他的衬衫。

Zann yelped in pain. He picked up speed, trying not to imagine the Beast's sharp teeth digging into his skin

赞痛得叫了一声。他加快了速度，尽量不去想象野兽锋利的牙齿咬进皮肤的感觉。
