" Hey! What are you doing?" Zann cried

“嘿！你在干什么？”赞喊道。

Zing glanced at his master and then at Boz

青瞟了一眼他的主人，又看向博兹。

With a burst of smoke, the dragon leaped into the air

随着一阵烟雾，小龙腾空跃起。

" Oh!" Boz exclaimed as the little dragon flew at him, snatched the stone out of his hand, and swallowed it

“哦！”博兹惊叫道，小龙朝他扑来，抢走他手里的石头，一口吞了下去。

" Give that back or you'll be sorry, you scaly scoundrel!"

“把那个还回来，否则有你好看，你这个长鳞的坏蛋！”

Teplo put a hand on Boz's arm. He had already undone Boz's Lip-Zip spell

特普洛把手搭在博兹的胳膊上。他已经解开了博兹的封嘴咒。

" Settle down, old friend," Teplo said soothingly

“消消气，老朋友，”特普洛安抚道。

旁白 neutral

" It won't do any harm to let the boy keep his souvenir, eh?"

“让那孩子留着纪念品也没什么坏处，嗯？”

Boz glared at Zing and sighed." I suppose you're right," he said, straightening his clothes

博兹瞪了青一眼，叹了口气。“我想你是对的，”他边说边整理着衣服。

" Come, Teplo. I promised the king I'd fetch those texts from the archives right away."

“走吧，特普洛。我答应了国王，这就去档案馆取那些文献。”

Teplo nodded and then glanced at the kids

特普洛点点头，然后瞥了孩子们一眼。

" See you at Saffa's in an hour."

“一小时后在萨法家见。”

" We'll be there," Gliss promised

“我们会去的。”格莉丝保证道。

" What was that all about?" Perda wondered after the two old men zapped away

“那到底是怎么回事？”两个老人传送走后，佩达疑惑道。

" I have no idea." Zann whistled for Zing

“我也不知道。”赞恩吹口哨呼唤小青。

The little dragon flew over and landed in front of him

小龙飞过来，落在他面前。

Zing shot out a burst of flame. The stone tumbled out with it

小青喷出一团火焰。石头随着火焰滚落出来。

Zann grabbed the stone." Ow!" he blurted out, juggling it from one hand to the other to keep it from burning his skin

赞恩抓起石头。“哎哟！”他脱口喊道，把石头在两手之间来回倒换，以免烫伤皮肤。

" Extinguish!" he said, rubbing one leg against the other to create enough friction for the spell

“消散！”他说着，用一条腿摩擦另一条腿，制造足够的摩擦力来施展咒语。

Instantly the stone felt cool in Zann's hand

石头立刻在赞恩手中变得凉爽了。

Gliss leaned over to peer at it

格里斯凑过去仔细看了看。

" Hey, it doesn't look burned at all," she said

“嘿，看起来一点都没被烧坏。”她说。

" It must be fireproof," Darb said." I wonder where it came from."

“它肯定是防火的，”达尔布说，“不知道是从哪儿来的。”

" Me too." Zann turned the stone over in his hand." Teplo seemed to recognize it."

“我也想知道。”赞恩把石头在手里翻了个面。“特普洛好像认出了它。”

" So did Boz," Gliss said." I can't believe he did a Lip-Zip spell on Teplo! He's lucky Teplo didn't get mad."

“博兹也是，”格里斯说，“真不敢相信他对特普洛施了‘封口咒’！特普洛没发脾气，算他走运。”

" Yeah," Perda said." If they won't tell us about the stone, maybe we can try to research it on our own."

“是啊，”珀达说，“如果他们不告诉我们这石头的事，也许我们可以自己试着研究研究。”

Zann sighed." We can try. But we're running out of time

赞恩叹了口气。“我们可以试试。但我们的时间不多了。

Once we're back in Swamp Bottom, it will be much harder to do anything." He leaned over and scratched Zing

" Anyway, thanks for getting the stone back for me, little buddy."

Zann jumped back as Teplo's sniffer goose leaped out the front door at him

" Quit it!" said Zann, dodging the goose's beak

“别闹了！”赞恩一边躲开鹅嘴，一边说道。

" Down, girl," Teplo added with a chuckle." It's just us."

“乖，别闹，”特普洛轻笑着补充道，“是自己人。”

The goose backed down, but her beady little eyes were still trained on Zann

那只鹅退后了，但它那双圆圆的小眼睛仍然紧盯着赞恩。

Zann ignored her as he followed Teplo, Boz, and Darb into the house

赞恩不去理会它，跟着特普洛、博兹和达布进了屋。

The four of them had just returned from that evening's dinner party, though Zann had been too distracted to enjoy himself much

他们四个刚从今晚的晚宴上回来，不过赞恩一直心事重重，没怎么享受到乐趣。

" Anyone care for a game of exploding dominoes?"

“有人想来一局爆炸多米诺骨牌吗？”

Teplo rubbed his hands together to trade his party clothes for his usual robe and sandals

特普洛搓了搓手，换掉聚会穿的衣服，穿上他平常的长袍和凉鞋。

" No thanks," Zann said." I'm pretty tired. I think I'll go to bed."

“不了，谢谢，”赞恩说，“我很累了。我想去睡觉了。”

" Me too," Darb said

“我也是，”达布说。

Zann and Darb headed upstairs to the guest room they were sharing

When the door shut behind them, Zann spun to face his friend

" I can't stand this anymore," he blurted out

" I need to know what happened to my parents!"

" I understand," Darb said." Maybe Boz — "

" Forget Boz!" Zann interrupted." I need to come up with a plan to find my parents on my own."

“别提博兹了！”赞恩打断他，“我得自己想个计划去找我父母。”

He paced back and forth." Maybe I should just try jumping into a wormhole like I said before."

他来回踱着步。“也许我该像我之前说的那样，直接试试跳进虫洞。”

Bang! A small explosion came from downstairs

砰！楼下传来一声小小的爆炸声。

Boz and Teplo were apparently playing dominoes

显然是博兹和特普洛在玩骨牌。

" What?" Darb sounded alarmed." Zann, that's crazy!

“什么？”达布的声音听起来很惊慌，“赞恩，这太疯狂了！

It's no plan at all. You'll end up lost just like your parents!"

这根本算不上计划。你会像你父母一样迷失的！”

" Well, it would be better than doing nothing!"

“哼，那也比什么都不做强！”

Zann stopped pacing and glared at his friend

赞恩停下踱步，盯着他的朋友。

" Morb and Wyssa both seem to think my parents are still out there somewhere in the vortex!"

“莫布和薇莎似乎都认为我父母还在漩涡里的某个地方！”

Another domino exploded

又一块骨牌炸开了。

" I know," Darb said." But you need help from someone who knows more about these things

Why don't you try talking to your grandfather again?"

Zann rolled his eyes." Are you kidding?

You saw how Boz reacted when he saw the stone."

Darb shrugged." I think you just took him by surprise

Boz is a reasonable person, and he cares about you

Maybe if you ask nicely, he'll talk to you about what's going on."

" Do you really think so?" Zann was dubious

Boz hadn't seemed very reasonable when he'd snatched the stone earlier

" It's worth a try," said Darb." What have you got to lose?"

Zann hesitated. But finally he nodded. He trusted Darb's judgment

" Okay," he said." I'll talk to him."

Zann opened the door and headed for the stairs

At the top he took a deep breath to calm himself

The dominoes had stopped exploding, and he could hear Boz and Teplo talking quietly

Feeling curious, Zann leaned forward to listen

"... and that doesn't leave much time," Teplo was saying

“……那留给我们的时间不多了。”特普洛说道。

" Perhaps not," Boz replied." But the plan is set. We leave First City tomorrow afternoon."

“也许吧，”博兹回答，“但计划已经定了。我们明天下午就离开第一城。”

Zann gasped and backed away from the staircase. Tomorrow afternoon?

赞恩倒吸一口气，从楼梯边退开。明天下午？

It was too late to try to talk to Boz about the stone. Zann had to act now!

再想跟博兹谈石头的事已经太迟了。赞恩必须马上行动！

He hurried back to the guest room

他急忙回到客房。

Darb looked surprised." What happened?"

达布一脸惊讶。“发生什么事了？”

" Nothing. I, uh, decided I'm too tired to argue with Boz right now."

“没什么。我，呃，我觉得太累了，现在不想跟博兹争辩。”

旁白 neutral

Zann zapped himself into his pajamas and climbed into bed." I'll talk to him tomorrow."

赞恩用法术给自己换上了睡衣，爬上床。“我明天再跟他谈。”

" Oh. Okay, good-night." Darb got into bed too

“哦。好吧，晚安。”达布也上了床。

旁白 neutral

Zann rubbed his fingers to extinguish the light

赞恩搓了搓手指，熄灭了灯。

Then he lay in the dark, staring at the moonlit ceiling

然后他躺在黑暗中，盯着洒满月光的天花板。

He felt guilty about lying to his best friend

他为欺骗自己最好的朋友而感到内疚。

But Zann's plans had changed, and Darb definitely wouldn't approve of what Zann was going to do next

但赞恩的计划已经变了，达布肯定不会赞成他接下来要做的事。
