" Oh no," Zann thought." Maybe we should have kept trying

to get home instead of coming back here."

" This is really bad news!" Perda exclaimed

The teenage boys had wandered off, but a man and woman walked by

Perda tapped the man on the arm." Excuse me. Did you

see Vilkor and Mellis leave just now?"

" Mellis?" The man sounded distracted as he stared

at Zing, who was puffing smoke at a beetle.

" Do you mean that girl who was with King Vilkor?"

"你是指和Vilkor国王在一起的那个女孩吗？"

" Yes, that's her," the woman said. She smiled at the kids

"是的，就是她，"女人说，并对孩子们笑了笑。

" King Vilkor and Princess Mellis left a few moments ago."

"Vilkor国王和Mellis公主刚走了一会儿。"

" Did Mellis fight back when her uncle dragged

her away with him?" Zann asked.

The man and woman traded a surprised look

"No, of course not," the woman said.

" They're both eager to spread magical peace

and prosperity throughout Terrica."

The pair walked away

Zann thought back to how Mellis had screamed right before

he and Perda zapped away earlier.

" Do you think the man and woman are right?" he asked Perda

" Maybe Mellis guessed we were leaving Terrica and decided to join

forces with Vilkor and the rest of the inner circle for real."

" No way." Perda sounded certain

“不可能。”珀达语气很肯定。

" She probably wanted to get away from Zira

so she could talk some sense into Vilkor.

We have to find her. Maybe we can try a Uniting spell."

Zann still felt troubled." A Uniting spell only works

if the person wants to be found.

If Mellis is mad at us for leaving her behind, it won't work."

Perda rolled her eyes." Don't be silly. Of course

she isn't—hey, look! There's Anso!"

She rushed toward a boy who was standing nearby

Zann followed her, and she introduced the two of them

" What's going on?" Perda asked Anso." We heard Mellis left with Vilkor."

“发生什么事了？”珀达问安索。“我们听说梅莉丝跟着维尔科走了。”

Anso looked around." We shouldn't talk about

this in public," he whispered.

He led them to a hidden spot behind a large, flowering shrub

他把他们带到一丛开着花的大灌木后面一个隐蔽的地方。

" Okay, tell us what happened," Zann said

“好了，告诉我们发生了什么，”赞恩说。

" After you two left, Mellis convinced Zira and the others that

she was on their side now, since you'd left her behind."

Anso looked nervously over his shoulder." They believed

her, but she found me and told me the truth."

" What's the truth?" Perda asked

“真相是什么？”珀达问。

" She overheard Zira, Vilkor, and Krub talking

after you left," Anso said.

旁白 neutral

" They were happy because they thought you two had escaped

to your own world and would never come back."

" We did try to go home," Zann said." We were planning

to get help, though, and then come back."

旁白 neutral

Perda nodded." We wanted to come back and help

because we suspected that Zira was up to no good."

" You were right." Anso stopped talking and peeked

out around the shrub.

旁白 neutral

" Uh-oh, Krub is out there," he whispered." Let's get

out of here before he sees us."

He dashed out of their hiding place

Zann and Perda followed him away from the village green

with Zing flying alongside them.

Finally Anso darted into a narrow alley between two houses

Laundry flapped over the entryway, hiding the kids from the street

" We should be okay here, at least for now," he said

breathing hard after the run.

" Anyway, as I was saying, Mellis overheard Zira, Vilkor, and Krub plotting

to take over all of Terrica by using their secret knowledge of friction.

Zira is planning to use those purple berries in her courtyard

to create a potion that will make her magic even stronger."

" I knew it!" Perda said." We found out those berries

came from another world."

旁白 neutral

" Really? Wow." Anso looked impressed." But wait,"

he added, sounding worried. "That's not all."

Zann grabbed Zing, who was sniffing at the laundry

Then he looked back at Anso, concerned by the other

boy's worried tone. "What happened?" he asked.

" Mellis knew that her uncle and the others were

planning something bad," Anso said.

" She wanted to stop them, so she started teaching

people how to use friction."

Zann glanced at Perda, who appeared surprised too

赞恩瞥了一眼珀达，珀达看起来也很惊讶。

" Mellis didn't want to do that earlier," Zann said

“梅莉丝之前不想那么做。”赞恩说。

Perda nodded." She must have decided it's worth the risk now."

珀达点点头。“她一定是觉得现在值得冒险了。”

Anso looked miserable." She was right to be afraid

安索一脸愁容。“她的害怕是对的。

Zira caught her showing some servants how

to use magic to do their work.

旁白 neutral

So Zira used magic to stop Mellis from talking to them."

于是齐拉用了魔法，不让梅莉丝再跟他们说话。”

" What do you mean?" Zann asked." Did she zap her

away from the servants or something?"

旁白 neutral

" No, she used some kind of spell to silence her," Anso said

“不，她用了某种禁言咒语。”安索说。

" Mellis can't speak at all now!

“梅莉丝现在完全说不了话了！

旁白 neutral

The only reason I know what happened is because she wrote

it down and convinced a servant to bring it to me."

He shook his head." I don't know what she wants me

to do about it though.

I'm just one kid! How can anyone fight back against

someone as powerful as Zira?"

" Hold on," Perda said." Zira knows that Mellis

was working against her.

Why did she let her go off with Vilkor instead of

punishing her? That doesn't seem like her style."

旁白 neutral

Zann shuddered, remembering how Zira had punished

Trof by trapping him with some gorzogs.

Anso shrugged." Zira and Krub were ready to dump Mellis

in a deep dungeon somewhere.

But Vilkor wanted to take her along, so they let him

They're still pretending he's in charge, even though pretty much

everyone else knows it's really Zira who's running things."

" Zira probably wants to keep Vilkor happy until

she grows more berries," Perda said grimly.

" And Mellis can't speak, so Zira probably isn't worried about her."

Zann clenched his fists, suddenly glad that he and Perda

hadn't found their way back to Magica after all.

" We have to find Mellis and rescue her!"
