" Why is Zann staring at me like that?" Perda thought

to feeling that way around Zann.

Suddenly the sound of voices echoed through the dark woods

Zann looked worried." Someone must be awake at camp."

" We should get out of here before we're caught," Perda said

" But it took me two zaps to get here from the village

and I don't have much magic energy left.

freedom to allow Perda's escape.

Then she noticed a shimmer over Zann's shoulder

over this way!" a man shouted.

Zann gulped." We'd better get out of here."

Perda expected him to zap them away

Instead Zann ran deeper into the woods. Perda followed

Perda gulped. The man sounded worried — and angry

" Wait up!" she whispered, shuffling after Zann

Soon they were back in the clearing. Zann stared at the wormhole's shimmer

Perda was still thinking about what Mellis had done

her there?" she thought.

goons and the Compel spell."

Then she realized what Zann had just said." Wait, what?" she exclaimed

" We can't leave without rescuing Mellis!"

Suddenly she realized what would change Zann's mind

She described how the plonk farmer had captured the feisty dragon

Zann gasped." Oh, no!" With one last look at the wormhole, he nodded

" Okay, you're right. We can't leave yet. Let's zap back to the village."

Perda was relieved." Okay. But I'm still tired from zapping here

You'll have to zap us both. Here, grab my arm."

She shuffled closer. Zann's hand encircled her arm, squeezing tightly

For some reason, his cheeks looked red.

But before Perda could wonder why, Zann rubbed

his other hand against his side.
