" Let him go!" Perda shouted as Trof yanked Anso's arm

" Don't tell me what to do!" The plonk farmer sneered

He grabbed Mellis with his free hand and glared at her

" Did you bring your friends in to do your work for you?"

" No, of course not!" Mellis cried in terror

Trof narrowed his eyes

" Zira warned that I'd have to keep an eye on you

to make sure you were working hard enough.

It seems she was right. You're the laziest

and sneakiest worker I've ever had!

You're lucky I don't feed you to the plonks."

Perda gritted her teeth." What do I do now?" she thought

Perda 咬紧牙关。"我现在该怎么办？" 她想。

" I can zap out of here anytime. But I can't leave Mellis

and Anso in the hands of this brute."

She was tempted to send a Blast spell at the farmer

But she held back. For one thing, it would be difficult to create

enough friction for that kind of spell while shackled.

Besides, it wouldn't be right to hurt him, even though

he was holding her friends as prisoners.

" Please, sir, listen to me," Perda said." If you let us go

I can teach you how to use magic."

Trof laughed." What could a child like you

possibly teach an adult like me?"

" I may be young, but I've been doing magic

my whole life," Perda replied.

" I come from a world where magic has existed forever

And the magic here in Terrica seems to work the same way as it does in my world."

Perda snapped her fingers a couple of times, since she

couldn't rub her hands together while shackled.

A piece of fruit appeared in her hand." See?"

Trof looked surprised, and then suspicious." Where did

that come from?" he asked.

" I was told that only certain people can perform magic

You must have had that fruit hidden in

your clothes or something."

" No, I created it with magic." Perda tossed

the fruit to the plonks.

A large one grabbed it and gobbled it up, snorting happily

The other plonks squealed hungrily

" I can teach you how to do it too," Perda said

She quickly created more food, making sure there

was enough for all the plonks.

Soon the creatures were chomping, chewing

and grunting with joy.

Trof's eyes narrowed." Are you trying to trick me?

If you truly can create something out of nothing

why not create something more useful?

Perhaps a new board to replace the one

the plonks broke yesterday?"

He gestured to a cracked section of the rickety wooden fence

" Sure, I can do that," Perda said

She created more friction, and moments later

a board appeared in front of Trof.

His eyes widened." You did that by

snapping your fingers?"

" Basically, yes." Perda briefly explained

how friction worked.

" Go ahead and try it," she said

" You can create anything you need — more boards, nails

food . . . anything except humans or animals."

Trof still looked suspicious. But he dropped his hold

on Anso, who sidled a short distance away.

Trof didn't notice. He was busy snapping his fingers

" Nails!" he shouted

Several nails appeared in his hand

He gasped." It worked! I did magic!"

Perda smiled and nodded. She wished that

Trof would let go of Mellis.

Then she could grab her and Anso and zap them all away

But the farmer was keeping a tight hold on Mellis' arm

even as he continued snapping with the other hand.

He went on to create a new hat for himself, a hammer

to help him fix the fence, and several more boards.

" But wait!" he exclaimed as a board dropped at his feet

" Why should I waste my time building the fence myself?

Can I make one by magic?"

Perda shrugged, still trying to figure out how

they could all escape. "Sure," she said.

" You'll need a little more friction for that though

You could try rubbing both your hands together."

She hoped that would make him drop his hold on Mellis

Instead he rubbed his free hand vigorously

against his belly. "New fence!" he cried.

" Tall and strong, so the plonks can't break out!"

A tall, sturdy fence appeared around the plonk pen

" Very nice." Perda was still trying to come up with a plan

She'd planned to offer to shackle Mellis' arms as well

so that Trof would let go of her.

Then Perda could zap the three of them away and release Anso

and Mellis from their shackles once they'd landed.

But if Trof was the one to put a Shackle spell on Mellis, only he could undo it

The man was already rubbing his hand on his belly again

" All right, what was the word you used again?" he asked

Before Perda could figure out how to respond, there was

a loud whistle from overhead.

A second later the new fence burst into flames. Startled

the plonks ran all around, squealing.

Trof cried out in surprise and fear, and Mellis

and Anso both looked scared.

But Perda felt a flash of hope when she looked up and saw a little

red dragon dive-bombing another section of fence.

" Zing!" she cried

“小星！”她喊道。
