" So that's exactly what you're going to do."

" How am I supposed to work like this?"

Zann held up his shackled hands as he followed the men

Zann felt skeptical. He'd never heard of such a spell

" Good." Krub murmured a word under his breath

and Zann's arm shackles disappeared.

Zann was disappointed. Once again he'd failed

to hear the password.

Next Krub rubbed his hands together and created a shovel

He handed it to Zann." Now start digging."

" Why?" Zann said." It should be easy to extract whatever

you want by using magic."

nastier than ever. "Get to work!"

An hour later Zann was sweaty, exhausted

and covered in dust and grit.

He also felt frustrated. He kept trying to tell Krub that he could

do what Zira wanted better and faster with magic.

" Why does she want us to find this stuff anyway?" he asked

" What did you call it? Crumblestone?"

" Regular magic is caused by friction — that's all

to remember his lessons from school.

" At least I don't think they do."

The goon rolled his eyes." What do you know? You're just a kid."

He wiped his brow and turned to Krub

" It's hot in this cave. Let's go outside for a drink."

Krub nodded and then glared at Zann

" Don't try anything, kid. Remember, Zira is watching!"

Zann was glad to see them go

There were no other miners in this part of the cave

" This world seems like Magica in some ways," Zann

thought as he chewed his food.

" But in other ways it's so different!

It reminds me of tales about the Old Times, when Magica

wasn't as modern and peaceful as it is now."

He glanced around the cave

But it was much less scary

magic energy humming in the air.

" I guess every world has a mix of dangerous stuff

and harmless stuff," he thought.

" Except for Fardark or Drac. Those places are totally dangerous!"

Zann took a sip of airberry juice

" At least Zira hasn't figured out how to control dark magic

like old King Zanta did," Zann thought.

old fortress deep in the mountains."

Zann was surprised to realize how much he remembered

about Magica's history from his school classes.

" Some of it is actually pretty interesting," he thought

"No wonder Perda is obsessed with it lately."

Thinking about Perda made him miss her even more
