" Oof!" Perda cried out as she, Zann, and Zing fell back

onto the ground just outside the wall.

" A Shield spell!" Zann rubbed his shoulder where

he'd bumped it. "It felt like a strong one too."

Perda frowned." Zira saw me create the Shield spell to stop the gorzogs

She must have figured out how to do one herself."

Mellis hurried forward." Are you okay?" she asked." What happened?"

Perda and Zann quickly explained

" But why would she want to shield the well?" Zann said

Mellis didn't say anything for a moment. She appeared to be thinking

until we figure out a way past that Shield spell."

Perda realized he was right." Let's levitate up and look

into the well from above," she said.

" Maybe the shield goes only as high as the wall does."

Mellis looked around at the crowds of people

" Are you sure we should levitate where people can see?" she asked

" Good point." Zann squinted up at the tree, which Perda noticed

had grown even larger.

" A few branches are sticking out over the wall

We could try to grab them and climb up that way."

Zing helped by flying up and perching on a branch to make it sink lower

Then Perda climbed onto Zann's shoulders. That lifted her high

enough to grab the branch.

Soon all three kids were scrambling up toward the center of the tree

The shield stopped them before they reached the trunk

But they could look down over the wall.

Perda gasped when she saw the well." The water is clear now," she said

" I wonder if that means most of the magic energy has escaped."

They all stared down at the tangled mass of large roots

Before Perda could figure it out, Krub and Zira zapped into view below

Vilkor was with them. He looked sulky

Nobody paid any more attention to her than they had to Mellis

Zira waited a moment, tapping a foot impatiently

Then she snapped her fingers. A tall wall of fire sprang up

surrounding the entire crowd.

People screamed and shouted, coughing from the smoke

The flames crept inward, trapping everyone in a smaller and smaller area

Zann glanced into the well." Let's use this water to douse the flames."

" How can we do that?" Mellis cried." It's behind the Shield spell!"

" Most Shield spells work in only one direction," Perda explained

Zann nodded." A two-way shield is much more difficult to create

They all rubbed their hands together and focused on the well water

like Mellis had done with the pond water.

Mellis and Zann nodded, their expressions focused

They magically flung the water onto the ring of flames

The people were soaked, but the fire went out. Everyone ran away

Perda slumped with relief. Then Zira spotted them

Mellis looked nervous. But Perda wasn't scared of Zira

The little dragon stayed where he was, hidden in the branches. Zann shrugged

" Suit yourself," he said with a touch of annoyance

" Let's levitate down," Perda whispered." Maybe that will make

her realize who she's messing with."

They floated down, landing in front of Zira

" We're glad you're here," Zann said boldly

" Actually, I've changed my mind about you leaving," Zira said

She rubbed her fingers together and then pointed at them." Shackle!"

Magical arm and leg shackles appeared on Zann, Perda, and Mellis

Their hands were bound behind their backs

" Stop!" Perda cried." You can't do this!"

She gestured to Krub and two of the other men

" Take them away — to three separate far-flung corners of Terrica!"
