" Are you sure this will work?" Mellis stood, trembling, on the roof

of an abandoned building at the edge of the village.

Zann gave her a thumbs-up." Just do what we taught you," he called

" Deceleration spells are pretty easy."

" And don't worry," Perda added

" If it looks like you're in trouble, Zann and I will stop you before you hit the ground."

Zann smiled at Perda. It was fun working with her to

teach Mellis basic magic skills.

They'd been at it since seeing Vilkor at the village green the day before

" Okay, here I go!" Mellis glanced at Zing, who was flying

in lazy circles nearby.

She stepped off the edge of the roof. Zann held his breath

" Can she do it?" he thought

He rubbed a hand against his leg, just in case he needed to save her

But halfway down, Mellis' fall slowed — and then stopped. She floated in midair

" Hey!" she cried, sounding surprised and delighted." I did it! I decelerated!"

so much that now you're levitating!

I guess we don't need to bother teaching you that now."

Zann laughed." Yeah. You're a fast learner, Mellis!"

赞恩笑了。“是啊。你学得真快，梅莉丝！”

Mellis floated the rest of the way down." Thanks," she said." Magic is fun!"

梅莉丝悬浮着降到地面。“谢谢，”她说。“魔法真好玩！”

Zann grinned." Okay, here's a pop quiz. Create a chair so I can sit down."

赞恩咧嘴一笑。“好，来个突击测验。变把椅子，我好坐下。”

Mellis laughed and snapped her fingers

梅莉丝笑了，打了个响指。

A lounge chair appeared. Zann flopped onto it

一把躺椅出现了。赞恩一屁股坐了上去。

" Now do a Vanishing spell," Perda said

“现在施一个消失咒吧，”珀达说。

Mellis snapped her fingers again. The lounge chair

became invisible, but Zann could still feel it.

" Now do a Shackle spell," Zann said

“现在施一个束缚咒吧，”赞恩说。

" Okay," Mellis said

“好的，”梅莉丝说。

Suddenly Zann felt shackles on his wrists

突然，赞恩感觉到手腕上出现了镣铐。

" Hey!" Zann laughed." Unshackle me!"

“嘿！”赞恩笑了。“快给我解开！”

Mellis smiled as she pretended to be confused

梅莉丝微笑着，假装很困惑的样子。

" Hmm, I'm not sure I remember how to do that."

“嗯，我不太确定我记得怎么解开。”

Perda laughed, and Zing flew down and shot a playful spurt of flame at Zann

珀达笑了，小星飞下来，调皮地朝赞恩喷了一股火焰。

Zann laughed too. But then he noticed Zira walking past

赞恩也笑了。但这时他注意到齐拉从旁边走过。

He quickly hid the shackles and stood up

他迅速藏起镣铐，站了起来。

" Oh, hello, kids," Zira said." It's a lovely day, isn't it?

“哦，你们好，孩子们，”齐拉说，“今天天气真好，不是吗？

But I'm afraid I have no time for small talk. I'm late for a meeting with Krub."

She hurried on and disappeared around a corner

Zann and the girls exchanged a worried look

" Do you think she guessed what we're doing?" Mellis wondered

Perda shrugged." I doubt it. She was walking pretty fast. But never mind her

By the next morning, Zann and Perda had taught Mellis every spell they knew

After breakfast they reviewed a few things

" Try displacing the water from the pond," Zann suggested

Mellis rubbed her hands together, causing sparks

to fly. Then she pointed at the pond.

Zann and Perda gasped and jumped back as

all the water flew up in the air.

It disappeared into the sky

" Yikes!" Mellis said." Did I do it wrong?"

" No." Perda looked impressed." But you might have used

a little too much energy."

Zann squinted upward

赞恩眯起眼睛向上看去。

After a moment the pond water reappeared." Look out!" he cried

过了一会儿，池水重新出现了。“当心！”他喊道。

The water splashed down, splattering everywhere

水泼洒下来，溅得到处都是。

" Oops," Mellis said

“哎呀，”梅莉丝说。

" Don't worry," Perda said." You'll soon have better control

of your magic energy."

Zann nodded." When I was younger, I once tried to create

a cookie under the table because I didn't like my dinner.

But I accidentally created ten cookies, and my parents caught me."

He grinned sheepishly at the memory

Then he sighed. Thinking about his family made him miss them

Perda seemed to be feeling the same way

"Now you just need to practice."

Mellis looked sad." Does that mean you're leaving Terrica?

I understand. You must miss your home world. Can I come

along to say good-bye?

I've been meaning to visit the well anyway. I think I lost

something out there."

Just then Zira and Krub zapped into view." Is your uncle home?" Zira asked

" He's inside," Mellis said

The two adults disappeared into the farmhouse

"He and Zira seem pretty close."

Before Zann could respond, they all heard raised voices inside

Vilkor seemed to be arguing with the other two

" Let's go while they're distracted," Mellis said." I don't want

my uncle to ask where we're going."

They zapped to the well

他们瞬间移动到了水井边。

Zann was startled to find the area mobbed with people

赞恩惊讶地发现这片地方挤满了人。

" What's going on?" Perda asked as an excited-looking woman bumped into her

“怎么回事？”珀达问道，这时一个看起来很兴奋的女人撞到了她。

Zann glanced at the wall Zira had created around the well and the tree

赞恩瞥了一眼齐拉在水井和大树周围建造的围墙。

Lots of people were touching it or gazing at it

很多人都在触摸它，或是盯着它看。

" I guess people heard where the magic energy came from," he said

“我猜人们听说了魔法能量的来源。”他说。

" I wonder if Vilkor and Zira know that."

“不知道维尔科和齐拉知不知道这件事。”

Mellis looked worried

梅莉丝看起来很担心。

" They'll be angry when they find out." She cleared her throat

“他们发现后会生气的。”她清了清嗓子。

" Attention, everyone!" she said, using a Swelling spell to make

her voice louder than normal.

" This is private property. Please disperse!"

“这里是私人领地。请散开！”

Only a few people seemed to hear her. But none of them listened

好像只有几个人听到了她的话，但没一个人听进去。

" Just get out of here as soon as we leave," Perda suggested

" That way nobody can blame you for this."

Zann nodded and grabbed Zing." We'll miss you, Mellis," he said

赞恩点点头，抓住小星。“我们会想念你的，梅莉丝。”他说。

" Maybe we'll visit again some time."

“也许以后我们还会再来拜访。”

" That would be great," Mellis said." I'll miss you both. Thanks for everything!"

“那太好了。”梅莉丝说，“我会想念你们两个的。谢谢你们做的一切！”

They all hugged

他们全都拥抱了一下。

Then Zann and Perda created a Mutual Shackle spell so either of them could undo it

Zann also shackled himself to Zing

" You should zap us inside the wall," Zann said

" You're much more accurate at that sort of thing."

Perda nodded." Zap!"
