and Zann of being from another world.

" How do you know there are other worlds?" Zann blurted out

Zira smiled." So it's true?"

" Other worlds?" Vilkor let out a snort." What a ridiculous idea!"

Zira kept smiling." It explains everything: their magic abilities

And the way you kids defeated the gorzog was quite impressive

How did you do it?"

Perda still didn't trust Zira

She shot Zann a glance, hoping to stop him from

answering. But he didn't notice.

" First, Perda used a Shield spell," he began." Then she used a Shackle spell."

He quickly explained how both spells were done. Zira asked several questions

Zann gave her more basic magic tips about friction

focusing words, and directing the mind.

" I wish Zann would stop talking," Perda thought. But now it was too late

She tried to tell herself she was worried for nothing

out over the wall.

Well, that and the magic energy still seeping out in all directions

Now instead of drifting along the ground, it slid over

the wall and dissipated.

" Very impressive!" Vilkor said." But now how am

I supposed to reach my well?"

" The water is dangerous, my friend," Zira said." Remember?

This will keep our fellow villagers safe until we figure out how to purify it."

" Wow, Zira is learning fast," Perda whispered to Zann and Mellis

feeling a little unnerved.

" How did she figure out how to do such a large spell so quickly?"

" She is known to be very wise," Mellis whispered back

" We never mentioned being from another world to anyone here except Mellis

Zing, who was still flying overhead, whistled loudly

A moment later Vilkor let out a shout." Gorzogs!"

He pointed toward the horizon.

" A whole herd of them is headed this way!"

" Let's get out of here!" Zann said, whistling for Zing

" Wait." Perda said. The shackled gorzog still struggled against

the magical restraints, drooling and snarling.

" We can't leave it here like this."

Vilkor shrugged." Why not? When the other gorzogs arrive, they'll

see that it's helpless and devour it.

That will decrease the local population by one."

He obviously considered that a good thing. Perda hesitated

wondering if he was right.

But Mellis pulled her hand out of her uncle's." No!" she cried

" A gorzog can't help its nature. It would be cruel to leave it to be torn apart."

She came closer, flinching when the gorzog growled at her

" Unshackle," she said, rubbing her hands together

The gorzog's shackles remained intact, though sparks bounced

off them, exploding in the air.

Mellis ducked, and the gorzog whined fearfully

" You can't remove someone else's Shackle spell," Zann said

" Only the person who created it can undo it."

Perda stepped forward." And that is me."

She looked back at the others

" Get ready to zap away as soon as I release the gorzog."

She unshackled the gorzog, and then everyone held hands

" Zap!" Zira shouted

They landed in a village. The street was narrow and unpaved

and lined with shabby huts.

However, the magic energy had clearly arrived

Green grass and bright flowers sprouted everywhere, and colorful

fruit hung from the trees.

A bush covered in vibrant purple berries was visible over the walled

yard of the nearest hut.

" I wish Darb were here to identify those berries," Perda thought

" I feel as if I've seen them before, but I can't remember where."

" I thought so too," Zann said." I was about to zap us there, but Zira was faster."

Perda nodded, surprised once again

Zapping was pretty basic magic, but it took time to learn

how to land in a specific spot.

Zira had a sly smile." Let's step inside, Vilkor. We have much to discuss."

The two adults disappeared into the hut

" I guess we're not part of the discussion," Zann said

" Let's zap back to the well and try to open the wormhole."

" We can't go now." Mellis looked nervous

" Those gorzogs will still be sniffing around."

" They can't climb that wall, can they?" Perda asked

" We could zap ourselves inside it."

She grinned at Zann, remembering all the times he'd carelessly

landed in a puddle or pond.

" Zann is good at zapping into water."

Just then several people raced into view on the street

" What's happening?" cried a wild-eyed woman

A tall man tore at his hair

" The whole world is changing!" he wailed." It's the end of time!"

" Where's the council?" A stout man shoved past the others

“议会在哪里？” 一个壮实的男人推开其他人挤了过来。

" We need to know what they plan to do about all of this!"

Vilkor and Zira came back outside

" Calm down, everyone!" Vilkor cried

" There's no need to panic," Zira added loudly." Everything is under control

Go home, and I'll update you as needed."

She noticed the three kids and Zing

" That goes for you too. Return to Vilkor's house and stay there."
