Perda could see the panic on Zann's face. She felt a flash of fear herself

But then she thought again about that Shackle spell

" It takes magic to reverse that spell," she thought

" Maybe they don't call it magic here," she said to Zann

" They might use a different word." She turned to face Mellis

" How do you create things here? Do you use friction or some other way?"

" Friction?" Mellis sounded distracted

" I'm not sure what you mean. But please, tell me — what is that creature?

I've never seen anything like it!"

She pointed to Zing, who was sniffing at an insect

" That's Zing," Zann replied." He's a dragon. I guess you don't

have dragons in Terrica."

Perda shrugged." Lots of worlds don't have dragons," she reminded him

" Mellis, how do you create food when you're hungry?"

“梅利斯，你饿的时候怎么变出食物呢？”

Mellis looked confused again." You mean, how do I prepare it?" she asked

梅利斯又露出困惑的表情。“你是说，我怎么准备食物吗？”她问。

" I usually cook it over a fire, like everyone else

“我通常用火烤着吃，和其他人一样。

Although my uncle and I grow some fruits and vegetables

that are edible without cooking."

Perda and Zann traded a glance. Zann was looking panicky again

But Perda was still thinking about that Unshackle spell

" I bet this world has very weak magic," she said

" Wyssa's home world was the same way, remember, Zann?

That's why she learned all about mixing potions out of berries

and stuff—that's how they do magic there."

" So you think we're in Wyssa's home world?" Zann said

Perda shook her head." This doesn't look like that world at all," she said

" I'm just saying that Terrica might have weak magic too."

" Maybe," Zann agreed

" Come to think of it, the teachers at school are always saying

that healing magic takes lots of energy.

That's why they stopped letting me bring Zing to school."

" Let's try something easier than a Healing spell," Perda said

" It's awfully hot out here. I'd like a nice, cool cup of airberry juice."

She closed her eyes and pictured the juice. For a moment nothing happened

" It's not working," Zann said

Perda focused even harder on the image, rubbing one hand

on her leg to create more friction.

Finally she felt something land in her other hand. But it didn't feel like a cup

When she opened her eyes, it didn't look like a cup either. It was

a single airberry, shriveled and dry.

" Oh my goodness!" Mellis cried, her eyes wide with amazement

" You just made that berry appear out of nowhere!

You must be nearly as powerful as Zira, the head of our village council!

She can perform incredible feats with her potions."

" Potions?" Perda tossed the airberry to Zing, who chomped it down eagerly

" Aha! That must be the only kind of magic here."

Zann shrugged." I guess so

At least now we know there's some magic energy in this world

even if it's not strong enough for Healing spells."

He glanced at his scraped arm. Then he gasped

" What is it?" Perda stepped toward him, concerned

"Is your injury getting worse?"

" No, it's not that." Zann gulped." The magic here isn't

strong enough for Healing spells.

Well, opening a wormhole takes a lot more energy

than healing a scrape, doesn't it?

旁白 neutral

What if we can't get it to open? How will we go home?"

要是我们打不开怎么办？我们怎么回家？”

" What's a wormhole?" Mellis asked

“什么是虫洞？”梅利斯问。

旁白 neutral

But Perda barely heard her. She and Zann rushed

to the spot where they'd arrived.

The dirt and scrubby grass looked the same there as everywhere else

Luckily Perda remembered that the vortex had spit

them out close to the scraggly little tree.

" This is the spot," she told Zann." I'm sure of it."

" Back in Magica, all you have to do to open a wormhole

is step close enough to it," Zann said.

" Your own natural magic energy joins with the energy

in the air to open it. So why isn't this one opening?"

Perda wiped sweat from her brow and glanced around

" Maybe I'm wrong about the spot," she said." Let's try over this way."

But no wormhole appeared." The magic is weak here, right?" Zann said

" Maybe we have to create more energy to get it to open."

" It's worth a try," Perda agreed. What Zann had said made sense

Back in Magica, magic energy was everywhere

Friction was a way of focusing it to do what you wanted it to do

If the energy here was very weak, it would probably take much more friction

to gather enough magic energy to open a wormhole.

She and Zann spent a few minutes creating as much friction as they could

Zann got Zing to rub against his leg to add a little more friction

They even convinced Mellis to help.

" Why are we rubbing our hands together?" she asked at last

" It's a way to bring magic energy to us," Zann explained

" When there's enough, the wormhole should open."

But a short while later, their hands were sore and nothing had happened

" Too bad we don't have one of those relics from your parents' lab," Perda said

" The reason they're so powerful is that they're full

of superconcentrated magic energy.

That would definitely help us open the wormhole!"

Zann flopped down on the ground to rest. Then he sat up straight

" Hey!" he exclaimed." What about that weird metal thing

we found in the Wormwood tree's root?

It looked kind of like a relic. I bet that's what opened

the wormhole there. Maybe it will work here too!"

Perda felt a surge of hope. But just as quickly, her heart sank again

" Maybe," she said." But I dropped it when I grabbed you

to stop you from falling into the wormhole.
