Julia heard Brody gasp loudly beside her

But she didn't take her eyes off the snakes slithering toward Heracles from every direction

All of them had the triangular heads of venomous serpents

If she didn't do something, the fastest snake would reach Heracles within seconds!

Julia glanced around the room. A few feet away she spied a barrel with several javelins

She grabbed a javelin and leaped forward

" Be careful!" Brody cried

Julia used the javelin to flick the fastest snake to the side

The creature hissed, and then lunged toward the end of the javelin

" Quick!" Julia called to Markos and Brody

" Grab a javelin! Call Iphicles to help us!"

Markos dashed to the door, almost colliding with Iphicles, who was just walking in

" Hurry!" Markos exclaimed." The serpents are threatening your brother!"

“快！”马科斯喊道。“毒蛇在威胁你弟弟！”

" What?" Iphicles' jaw dropped. He froze in the doorway, staring at the sleeping Heracles

“什么？”伊菲克勒斯目瞪口呆，他愣在门口，盯着熟睡的赫拉克勒斯。

" Grab a javelin!" Brody said." If you guys can hold back the snakes, I'll drag Heracles outside."

“拿一根标枪！”布罗迪说。“如果你们能挡住蛇，我就把赫拉克勒斯拖出去。”

Markos rushed over to the javelin barrel

马科斯冲到标枪桶旁。

Julia glanced at Iphicles, but he was still standing there, as if he didn't know what to do." Help us!" she exclaimed

朱莉娅瞥了伊菲克勒斯一眼，但他还站在那里，好像不知道该怎么办。“帮帮我们！”她喊道。

" Never mind him," Markos said." I think he's stunned."

“别管他了，”马科斯说。“我想他吓呆了。”

He leaped forward and flicked away the largest snake." Got one!"

他跳上前，把最大的蛇挑开了。“搞定一条！”

Julia forgot about Iphicles and knocked a smaller snake off to the side

朱莉娅不再理会伊菲克勒斯，把一条较小的蛇打到一边。

Working together, she and Markos soon cleared a path for Brody

她和马科斯齐心协力，很快为布罗迪清出了一条路。

" Cover me — I'm going in!" Brody said

He put his head down, charged toward Heracles, and grabbed the sleeping champion by his muscular shoulders

Brody grunted as he dragged Heracles slowly toward the door

布罗迪一边把赫拉克勒斯慢慢拖向门口，一边发出哼声。

Heracles mumbled and moved his hands, but he didn't wake up

赫拉克勒斯含糊地嘟囔着，手动了动，但没有醒来。

" Hurry!" Julia cried, flicking away a speedy little viper

“快！”朱莉娅喊道，弹开了一条快速窜来的小毒蛇。

" I think we're making them angrier! They're coming back toward us!"

“我觉得我们让它们更生气了！它们又冲我们过来了！”

" Look out!" Markos yelled." Behind you, Brody!"

“小心！”马科斯喊道。“你身后，布罗迪！”

Julia gasped when she saw a snake preparing to strike at Brody

朱莉娅看到一条蛇正要攻击布罗迪，不禁倒吸一口气。

" That one must have been hidden behind Heracles!" she exclaimed." Watch out, Brody!"

“那条蛇肯定一直藏在赫拉克勒斯身后！”她惊呼。“小心，布罗迪！”

As the snake struck, Brody dodged to one side, almost dropping Heracles

毒蛇发动攻击时，布罗迪猛地侧身一闪，差点失手摔下赫拉克勒斯。

The snake missed, and Brody managed to kick it away

毒蛇扑了个空，布罗迪顺势一脚把它踢开。

" Whoa, that was close," he said." I guess all that training Hermes is making me do is coming in handy!"

“哇，好险，”他说，“看来赫尔墨斯逼我做的那些训练还真派上用场了！”

His voice sounded a little shaky. Julia didn't blame him. The snake had nearly bitten him

他的声音听起来微微发颤。朱莉娅完全理解——那条蛇刚才差一点就咬到他了。

At last Brody managed to drag Heracles to the door

布罗迪终于把赫拉克勒斯拖到了门口。

" Excuse me, dude," he said, shouldering his way past Iphicles

“借过一下，老兄，”他说着，用肩膀挤开挡路的伊菲克勒斯。

Heracles' brother was still standing in the doorway

As Brody dragged Heracles past his brother, Iphicles finally seemed to wake up

He turned to Julia." Where did all those snakes come from?" he asked

" Where do you think?" Julia said grimly. Wasn't the answer obvious?

“你觉得呢？”朱莉娅沉着脸说。答案不是明摆着的吗？

" The gods are still after your brother."

She hurried outside after the other boys

她紧跟着其他男孩急忙跑出去。

Markos was already fetching water, which he then splashed in Heracles' face

马科斯已经取来水，然后把水泼在赫拉克勒斯脸上。

" Ugh," Heracles mumbled, one eye opening halfway." Is it raining?"

“呃，”赫拉克勒斯咕哝着，一只眼睛半睁着，“下雨了吗？”

" Wake up, brother!" Iphicles said loudly, leaning over and slapping Heracles on both cheeks

“醒醒，兄弟！”伊菲克勒斯大声说着，俯身拍打赫拉克勒斯的两边脸颊。

" You picked a bad spot to take a nap."

“你挑了个糟糕的地方打盹。”

旁白 neutral

" I'm sure it wasn't his idea," Julia said

" We heard Hypnos was seen plotting with Ares."

“我们听说有人看见许普诺斯与阿瑞斯密谋。”

" Ares?" Heracles mumbled. With a groan, he pushed himself into a sitting position

“阿瑞斯？”赫拉克勒斯咕哝道。他呻吟一声，撑着坐了起来。

" Yes, I was just talking to Ares. Where did he go?"

“对，我刚才还在跟阿瑞斯说话。他去哪儿了？”

" What were you and Ares talking about?" Markos asked

“你和阿瑞斯刚才在说什么？”马科斯问道。

Heracles rubbed his face sleepily." I... I don't remember."

赫拉克勒斯困倦地揉了揉脸。“我……我不记得了。”

His face stretched into a wide yawn

" Ares approached me — another god was with him, I think."

“阿瑞斯走到我面前——我觉得，还有另一位神和他在一起。”

Julia traded looks with Markos and Brody." Was it Hypnos?" she asked

朱莉娅和马科斯、布罗迪交换了一下眼神。“是许普诺斯吗？”她问道。

" Hypnos!" Heracles nodded." Yes, that's who it was

“许普诺斯！”赫拉克勒斯点点头。“是的，就是他。

The two of them said they were searching for someone. Or was it something?

I remember Hypnos touching my arm, and the next thing I know, I'm here with all of you."

Julia traded another look with the others." They tricked you," she told Heracles

朱莉娅又和其他人交换了一个眼神。“他们骗了你。”她对赫拉克勒斯说。

With help from the boys, she told Heracles what had happened

Heracles looked more awake by the end of the story

" I suppose that's why Zeus warned me never to go anywhere alone," he said

" You'd better take his advice from now on, dude," Brody said

" Come, brother," Iphicles said suddenly." Zeus will wonder what's keeping you."

Heracles smiled at Julia and the others

赫拉克勒斯对朱莉娅和其他人笑了笑。

" It seems I owe you my life," he said

" Then we're even," Brody said." You saved our lives when that bull automaton was chasing us, remember?"

“那我们就扯平了，”布罗迪说。“你从那只机器公牛追我们时救了我们，记得吗？”

Heracles nodded." Still, I offer you many thanks."

赫拉克勒斯点点头。“即便如此，我仍向你们表示深深的感谢。”

" You're welcome," Julia said. She shivered, thinking about all those snakes again

“不客气，”朱莉娅说。她打了个冷颤，再次想起那些蛇。

" I'm just glad we found you in time."

Heracles hurried off with his brother. Markos looked troubled

赫拉克勒斯和他的兄弟匆匆离开了。马科斯看上去很不安。

" I didn't want to say this in front of those two," he said

" But perhaps it would be better if Heracles doesn't survive until the Games."

" What?" Julia exclaimed

" Dude!" Brody added, sounding horrified

“伙计！”布罗迪也说道，语气听起来很震惊。

" No, listen," Markos said." If he dies now, Heracles will go to the underworld like anyone else. But if he makes it to the Games..."

“不，听着，”马科斯说。“如果他现在死去，赫拉克勒斯会像其他人一样去冥界。但如果他到了奥运会上……”

" Oh," Julia said, catching on." If he competes and loses, he might end up in Tartarus instead."

" Is this Tartarus place really that bad?" Brody asked

" I mean, I know you guys said it was terrible, but being dead sounds pretty terrible too."

Markos shuddered." Tartarus is said to be a deep pit of pure torment

The most evil people who ever lived are said to be there, where they are eternally punished for their wicked deeds."

" Wow," Brody said." Okay, that does sound bad." He shrugged

" But how can we keep Heracles from ending up there? I mean, there's not much the three of us can do, is there?"

Julia didn't have an answer for Brody's questions

She was glad when Hermes interrupted and dragged Brody off to prepare for the banquet
