After school Winnie and Mog had their first circus practice, and Gaby

was busy with a club meeting, so Ben floated home by himself.

As soon as he entered the house, Bones ran to him

leaping up to say hello.

" Down, Bones," Ben scolded." No jumping, remember?"

“下来，骨头。”本责备道。“不许跳，记得吗？”

Bones whined softly, pawing Ben's leg

骨头轻声呜咽着，用爪子扒着本的腿。

" Sorry, buddy, I can't play with you right now," Ben said

“对不起，伙计，我现在不能跟你玩。”本说。

" I have a ton of math homework. But maybe we can

take a walk or play fetch later."

Bones dropped to the ground

骨头一下子趴到了地上。

And then he instantly took off, racing frantically around the room

Ben laughed at the sight of the excited dog — until Bones' tail knocked

into the bookcase, and a vase began to teeter.

Ben shot over and caught the vase before it fell to the floor and smashed

" Bones!" Ben shouted." That's Mom's favorite vase

and you almost broke it!"

Bones whined and lowered his head

Ben instantly felt bad." I'm sorry for yelling at you

Bones," he said, patting the dog.

" Everything is okay. Sid and I will play fetch with you later, I promise."

At lunch the next day, Ben and Winnie carried their trays over to a table

Winnie's green eyes lit up

" It was amazing! Sarah Swingwire says Deb and I will be great at — Oops!"

She slapped a hand over her mouth

她猛地用手捂住了嘴。

" Remember Ringmaster Ronny's warning? I'm not supposed

to tell you anything about the circus acts."

" Is there anything you can tell me about the circus?" Ben asked

“那关于马戏团，有没有什么能告诉我的？”本问道。

" Um..." Winnie tapped her chin, thinking for a moment

“嗯……”温妮轻轻敲着下巴，想了一会儿。

" The circus is lots of fun." She quickly changed the subject

“马戏团特别有趣。”她迅速转移了话题。

" So how was your afternoon yesterday?"

“那你昨天下午过得怎么样？”

" It was okay, but..." Ben told her about the situation with Bones

“还行，不过……”本把骨头的情况告诉了她。

" He's been acting up lately, and my mom keeps threatening

to return him to the shelter.

I promised poor Bones I'd play fetch with him, but I forgot."

" That's terrible! Your mom can't give Bones back

to the shelter," Winnie said.

" Hey! My neighbor is a dog trainer, and I've watched her

working with skeleton dogs.

Maybe I could help you train Bones."

" That would be great," Ben said." Are you free today? We could — "

" Hi, Winnie and Ben!" Just then Deb strolled over to the table with Maddy

" Don't spill any circus secrets, Winnie," Deb said

with a grin. "Not even to Ben!"

" No worries," Winnie said." My lips are sealed!"

She pretended to lock her mouth and toss away a key

" She's telling the truth," Ben said

" She won't tell me a thing. How about you two?

Care to drop any hints about the big performance on Friday?"

" Nope," Deb said

" Sorry, Ben," Maddy added

“对不起，本，”麦蒂补充道。

" We'd love to, but Ringmaster Ronny swore us to secrecy

Besides, we don't want to face the wrath of the circus!

See you later at practice, Winnie."

They sat at a nearby table." Oh, right. You have

practice after school today."

Winnie nodded." Yep, every day until the big show on Friday

温妮点点头。“是啊，每天都有，直到周五的大演出。

It's a pretty intense schedule."

" I guess I won't see you much this week," Ben said." That stinks."

Winnie nodded." Yeah, I won't have time for anything

besides school and the circus.

But I think the circus is going to be really fun."

Ben stayed quiet for a moment

本沉默了一会儿。

Winnie seemed to notice that he felt a little bad

" Here, do you want my iced sludge?" Before Ben

could answer, a shout rang out.

" Wow! Look at Maddy!" one head of a two-headed monster cried

“哇！快看麦蒂！”双头怪物的一个脑袋喊道。

" Yeah! Look at Maddy!" the other head said

“是啊！快看麦蒂！”另一个脑袋说。

Maddy had jumped up, and now she was tossing

fried bat wings into the air.

" Whoa," Ben said." Maddy is juggling like a pro! Did she learn how

to do that at practice yesterday?"

" Sorry, my lips are sealed!"

“对不起，我得保密！”

旁白 neutral

" Right..." Ben turned back to see Maddy's arms whipping about

scooping up even more items from lunch trays.

" Hey!" a vampire cried." You took my bloodshake, and I'm really thirsty!"

“嘿！”一个吸血鬼大叫。“你拿走了我的血腥奶昔，我真的很渴！”

A werewolf howled." Give me back my spicy lizard eyeballs!

My dad made them for me!"

Maddy pulled more things out of monsters' claws and hands

adding them to her juggling stream.

While others yelled and clapped, Ben couldn't help noticing Maddy's face

She was staring straight ahead with a blank expression

" Weird," Ben thought." She looks like she's in a trance."

He turned back to Winnie to ask her about Maddy's strange expression

他转向温妮，想问她麦蒂那奇怪表情是怎么回事。

But then he realized he already knew what Winnie

would say: "Sorry, my lips are sealed!"
