" Okay, everybody," Mr. Gwarg said

" Here's how things will work: you'll all try several

different circus arts today.

After lunch Mr. Freaky will announce the names of the six students

who will train with the circus.

Then, on Friday night, they will put on a performance here in the gym."

He stayed to watch her for a minute and couldn't help laughing a little

" Well, ghosts float, so they can't exactly walk across a high wire

Maybe you should skip this activity."

" Okay, sure," Ben mumbled

So far he'd been right about the circus arts — they just weren't for him

After lunch everyone returned to the gym to find out which students

would be chosen for the circus performance.

" I don't think I'll get chosen," Gaby said to Ben

Screech! A horrible noise filled the gym as Mr. Freaky

tapped the microphone.

" Ooh! Pardon me! Students, the big moment is here!

Our first monster performer is..." He glanced down

at the list in his hand. "Maddy!"

Ben cheered as the octopus monster hurried forward

He wasn't surprised — Maddy had looked fantastic at the juggling station

tossing about eight balls in the air at once with her tentacles.

The second name called was Zork's

" Yes!" The lizard monster shot to his feet and pumped

his fist in triumph. "I rock!"

Ben rolled his eyes. The circus training hadn't even started yet

and Zork was already showing off.

Mr. Freaky continued naming performers

Cleo was next and then came Deb

When Mog's name was announced, Ben whooped loudly

act, where a performer was shot from a cannon.

" The sixth performer is..." Mr. Freaky paused dramatically." Winnie!"

" Yes!" Ben cried

She hurried forward, and Mr. Freaky gestured proudly

at the students onstage.

" Presenting the six monster performers in the very

first people-monster circus!"

Loud cheers, howls, boos, and moans rang out

" Winnie and Mog are going to be great!" Ben thought

Ringmaster Ronny hurried to the microphone

"Practice begins today, right after school."

Sarah joined him." We will be working extremely hard during these sessions

so unfortunately, they will be closed to everyone but the performers."

" Oh well," Ben thought

" And when you see the performers this week," Ronny added

"do not ask them about the circus.

Our secrets must remain hidden until the night of the show

"Face the wrath of the circus!"

" What's the wrath of the circus?" Gaby whispered

Ben shrugged." Who knows. But it sounds kind of threatening, doesn't it?"

rubbed his hands together.

" It sounds creepy — really, really creepy!"
