" What is she up to?" Laurie wondered as he suddenly caught sight of Jo coming out of the house

He was about to call out to her when he noticed her acting very strangely

Jo tiptoed out of the house, being careful not to slam the door, and quietly walked down the path

She was carrying a large envelope, which she held tightly as if her life depended upon it

Laurie wondered how many more times he could raise his hat in greeting to each passing lady, as was the custom for gentlemen to do in those days

" Good day, Madam," he said, imitating his grandfather's voice as two elderly women approached the shop he was standing in front of

Keeping one eye on the office where his friend had gone, Laurie politely opened the door for the ladies

To his delight, across the street, another door was opening at that moment, and soon Jo appeared looking excited, happy, and relieved

Laurie noted that she was no longer carrying the envelope

Having successfully ushered the ladies inside the store, Laurie ran toward Jo

Raising his hat, he shouted," Excuse me, Miss, one moment, please."

Jo turned around to see a gentleman running ( quite quickly, in her opinion ) in her direction

" Laurie?" she asked, surprised to see her friend in town

“劳里？”她问道，惊讶于竟在镇上遇见她的朋友。

" Of course it's me," he replied

“当然是我，”他答道。

" What are you doing here?" Jo asked as she pulled the hat from his hand and tried it on herself

乔从他手里抢过帽子，自己戴上，问道：“你在这儿干什么？”

" Never mind me, Jo March. What are you hiding?" Laurie demanded to know

“别管我，乔·马奇。你在隐瞒什么？”劳里追问道。

Flushing, Jo looked away and shrugged," I don't know what you're talking about."

乔脸红了，移开目光，耸耸肩说：“我不知道你在说什么。”

" Don't deny it, Jo, I saw you

“别否认，乔，我看见你了。

I followed you here, so I know you went inside that office

我跟踪你来这儿，就知道你进了那间办公室。

What is it? What is your secret? Tell me!" Laurie nearly shouted

怎么回事？你的秘密是什么？告诉我！”劳里几乎是喊出来的。

Jo crossed her arms stubbornly and said," That's very naughty of you to follow me, Theodore Laurence

乔倔强地抱起双臂，说：“跟踪我，你真是太调皮了，西奥多·劳伦斯。

And I don't have to tell you anything if I don't want to."

而且我不想说，就没必要告诉你。”

Laurie chewed on his lower lip then with a twinkle in his eye said," If you tell me your secret, I'll tell you mine."

劳里咬住下唇，眼里闪过一丝狡黠，说：“你要是告诉我你的秘密，我就把我的告诉你。”

Jo considered his offer then stuck out her hand

乔考虑了一下他的提议，然后伸出了手。

" Deal, but you must promise not to tell a soul."

Laurie swore he wouldn't say a word

Rubbing her hands together, Jo said breathlessly," I sold two stories to the newspaper. They bought my stories, Laurie!"

Laurie stared at his friend, then let out a loud shout of joy and gave her a big hug

The two women who had entered the store now came out and seeing this public display of affection

Ignoring them, Laurie and Jo linked arms and ran down the street, still cheering and making a lot of noise

As they got closer to their neighborhood, Jo turned to Laurie and said," Now you have to tell me your secret."

Laurie covered his mouth and held back a giggle." I don't know..."

" Laurie! We had a deal!" Jo said, grabbing his arm." What is it? Tell me!"

" Okay, but remember, you mustn't repeat what I'm about to tell you," he said seriously

" Laurie, tell me already!" Jo nearly screamed

" Brookes has a crush on..." Laurie's voice drifted off

Jo, her eyes growing bigger and more alarmed, whispered," Who? Meg?"

乔眼睛越睁越大，神色愈发惊慌，她低声问道：“谁？是梅格吗？”

Laurie nodded, grinning." It's more than a crush, actually; Brookes is in love with your sister."

劳里点点头，咧嘴笑着说：“其实不止是暗恋，布鲁克斯是爱上你姐姐了。”

Jo stopped, her feet suddenly heavy and heart weighed down with this unexpected revelation

乔停下了脚步，这突如其来的消息让她双脚突然变得沉重，心情也压抑起来。

" No, that's impossible." Jo shook her head

“不，这不可能。”乔摇了摇头。

" Why? Meg is a very beautiful girl and Brookes isn't a bad chap," said Laurie

Although she knew it would happen eventually, Jo refused to believe that one day her sisters would get married and have their own families

" Laurie, are you sure?" Jo asked, hoping this was one of his pranks

Jo pushed him farther away; her once light and carefree steps were now burdened with what Laurie had just told her

Two days later, Mother and all the girls, except for Jo, were sitting quietly in the living room, all occupied with their own work

Their peaceful afternoon, however, was suddenly interrupted by a noisy commotion in the foyer

At that moment, Jo, the cause of the deafening sounds, burst into the room, swinging a newspaper in the air, and dashing around as if she were on fire

" Jo! What on earth! Calm down, child!" Mother spoke sternly

" Sorry, Mother," gasped Jo, as she ran past and pecked her mother on the cheek

" Jo! What's so exciting about that newspaper?" called out Amy

“乔！那份报纸有什么好兴奋的？”艾米喊道。

Finally Jo collapsed onto the floor next to Beth, who gently took the paper from her

乔终于瘫倒在贝丝旁边的地板上，贝丝轻轻地从她手里拿过报纸。

It was open to a particular page." Like Mother, Like Daughter," Beth read," by Josephine March. Jo! This is your story!"

Soon the entire house was filled with loud cheers and a great deal of shouting
