旁白 neutral

" Huh?" Henry said." Why would Daisy want to ruin her own shirt?"

" To get sympathy!" Maggie said

" Maybe Daisy thought the judge would hear that Daisy's shirt was missing and feel sorry for Daisy

Then the judge would be more likely to give Daisy a blue ribbon!"

Henry shook his head. Maggie's theory was a little crazy

" I don't think that's very likely, Maggie

For one thing, it doesn't explain the blue stain."

" Yes, it does," Maggie argued

" Daisy probably tried to stain the shirt with one of those lollipops first

Then she decided that wasn't bad enough

So she pretended someone stole the shirt, and then put it in the water trough herself."

" But she just told us the blue lollipops are her favorite," Henry said

" She probably wouldn't admit that if she had made that stain herself."

Maggie frowned, looking stubborn." How do you know?"

" Because Daisy's not stupid," Henry said

" Besides, if she is the culprit, there's no way we'll get that detective fee

So you'd better hope it was somebody else."

" Oh. I guess you're right." Maggie thought for a second

" Okay, then maybe we should go investigate Rebecca again

She seems like a better suspect anyway."

" Let's go talk to Cole first," Henry suggested." Maybe he'll have some ideas."

Soon Henry and Maggie were telling Cole the latest news

Cole listened quietly, sucking on another green lollipop

Two more green lollipops were sitting on the table beside him

" So now we think it's Rebecca again," Maggie finished." What do you think?"

Cole glanced at the lollipops on the table

" Are you sure the shirt didn't get ruined by accident?"

" By accident?" Maggie made a face

" How would Daisy's shirt accidentally get from her pony's stall to the water trough?

Or accidentally get that weird blue stain on it?"

" I don't know." Cole shrugged again

" But your dad is always joking about how messy horses are

And you already said your pony drooled on your shirt, right?"

" Hey, guys," Henry put in before Maggie could respond

" Look, Rebecca's heading this way. This could be our chance to question her."

" What should we ask her?" Maggie wondered

Henry bit his lip

How could they ask Rebecca any more questions about the case without letting her know she was a suspect?

" I'm not sure," he said

" Wait!" Maggie whispered." I think I have an idea."

" Uh-oh," Henry thought. Some of Maggie's ideas were good, but others weren't so good

" Hi, Rebecca," Maggie said with a big smile." Welcome to our lemonade stand!"

" Um, thanks." Rebecca still looked grumpy

" Guess what?" Maggie went on." We're having a special right now

If you buy a cup of our delicious lemonade, you get a free lollipop!"

" Hey," Cole protested as Maggie grabbed one of the lollipops off the table

Maggie ignored him, waving the lollipop in Rebecca's face

" This one's kiwi. Do you like that kind?

What's your favorite flavor?" she asked

Henry guessed what Maggie was trying to do

She was hoping that Rebecca would admit to liking blueberry lollipops best

That would be a clue that she might have stolen Daisy's shirt

But Rebecca just frowned and pushed the lollipop away

" I can't have candy," she said." Or lemonade, either

I have diabetes, so I'm not allowed to eat sugar."

Henry blinked in surprise

Maggie was surprised too." Really?" she said

" Yeah." Rebecca shrugged

" Anyway, I came to tell you, Maggie, that Ms. Wood is looking for you

She wants us to start getting ready for our second class."

" Oh, right." Maggie looked at her watch, and then at Henry and Cole

" I've got to go."

" Good luck in your class," Henry said." We'll be cheering for you."

" Thanks." Maggie hurried off toward the barn with Rebecca

" Wow," Henry said to Cole when the girls were gone

" I didn't know that Rebecca has diabetes

I guess that means she didn't cause that stain on Daisy's shirt

Not if it was made by candy, anyway."

" Yeah," Cole said

旁白 neutral

" Of course, that doesn't prove that she's not the shirt thief," Henry realized

" The stain could be a coincidence."

" I guess," Cole said

Henry glanced over at him. Cole was still sucking on his green lollipop

That made Henry think of something else

" Wait," he said." What if Rebecca already guessed that we're suspicious of her?

Do you think she's telling the truth about not being able to eat sugar?"

" She's telling the truth," Cole blurted out with a frown

" At least about the candy stain."

" Huh?" Henry was surprised by how certain Cole sounded." How do you know?"

Cole took a deep breath and looked Henry in the eye

" I know for a fact that Rebecca didn't put a blue lollipop in Daisy's shirt pocket," he said

" Because I did it."
