One afternoon, Nello and Patrasche had finished delivering the milk, and once more, Patrasche was watching outside the gates of the cathedral

一天下午，尼洛和帕特拉修送完了牛奶，帕特拉修又一次守在大教堂的大门外张望。

Patrasche noticed the church guard leave

帕特拉修注意到教堂看守离开了。

He crept through the gates, up to the cathedral's open doors, and inside

它悄悄溜进了大门，来到教堂敞开的门前，钻了进去。

In the dark church, he saw Nello kneeling down and staring at the high altar

在昏暗的教堂里，它看见尼洛跪在地上，凝视着高高的祭坛。

On it was the painting of the Assumption by Rubens

祭坛上挂着鲁本斯的画作《圣母升天图》。

On the walls of the cathedral, on either side of the altar, were two more paintings

But each was covered by a curtain

Patrasche saw two wealthy gentlemen put money in a metal box

Then, they went behind the curtain to see one of the paintings

Nello noticed Patrasche, went over to him, and took him gently outside

He looked back at the veiled paintings as they left

His face was wet with tears
