One day Mother rode the train to the next town to go shopping

有一天，妈妈乘火车去下一个城镇购物。

The children went to the station to meet her when she returned

Because they loved the station so much, they arrived an hour early

When a train arrived, Peter, Phyllis, and Bobbie rushed out to see it

They expected to see just one or two people, but instead the platform was crowded

Suddenly the children heard an unusual voice

A man was speaking a foreign language — a language the children had never heard before

一个男人在说一门外语——孩子们从未听过的一种语言。

" What's he saying?" someone asked

"他在说什么？"有人问。

" Sounds like French to me," said the stationmaster

"我觉得像法语，"站长说。

" It isn't French," said Peter

"不是法语，"彼得说。

旁白 neutral

" I know what French sounds like."

"我知道法语听起来是什么样的。"

The crowd parted to see who had spoken, and now Peter could see the man

人群让开了，想看看是谁在说话，这时彼得看到了那个男人。

He wore strange clothes, and had long hair and wild eyes

他穿着古怪的衣服，留着长发，眼神狂野。

" Well, try speaking to the man if you know so much," said one lady to Peter

“哼，你既然懂得那么多，那就去跟那个人说话呀。”一位女士对彼得说。

Just then the man ran forward, grabbed Peter's hands, and began speaking to him in French

就在这时，那男人跑上前，抓住彼得的双手，开始用法语对他说起话来。

" What's he saying?" the stationmaster asked

“他在说什么？”站长问。

旁白 neutral

" I don't know," answered Peter

“我不知道。”彼得回答。

The stationmaster took the man into the waiting room

站长把男人带进了候车室。

" Mother can speak French," Bobbie said to the stationmaster

“妈妈会说法语。”芭比对站长说。

" She'll arrive on the next train."

“她会搭下一班火车到。”

As they waited with the man, Peter got an idea

他们跟那个男人一起等着的时候，彼得想到了一个主意。

He pulled an envelope out of his pocket

他从口袋里掏出一个信封。

It was full of foreign stamps

信封里装满了外国邮票。

Peter showed the man an Italian stamp, pointing from the stamp to him

彼得给那个男人看了一张意大利邮票，又从邮票指向他。

But the man shook his head

但那男人摇了摇头。

旁白 neutral

Next the children showed him a Norwegian stamp and a Spanish stamp

接着孩子们又给他看了一张挪威邮票和一张西班牙邮票。

Again the man shook his head

那男人再次摇了摇头。

At last he took the envelope and searched among the stamps himself

最后他拿过信封，自己在那些邮票里翻找起来。

" He's Russian!" Phyllis exclaimed as the man held up a Russian stamp

“他是俄罗斯人！”菲莉丝见那男人举起一张俄罗斯邮票，大声说道。

By now Mother's train had arrived, and the stationmaster brought her into the waiting room

这时妈妈的火车已经到站，站长把她领进了候车室。

The Russian stood up and bowed

那个俄罗斯人站起身，鞠了一躬。

Mother spoke in French and he replied, a little at first, but then in longer sentences

妈妈用法语跟他说话，他也用法语回答，起初只是一点点，后来句子就长了起来。

The children watched Mother's face

孩子们看着妈妈的脸。

They could see that he was telling her things that made her angry and sad

他们看得出，他正在告诉她一些让她又生气又难过的事。

" Well, it's all right," Mother finally reported

“好了，没事了。”妈妈终于说道。

" He lost his ticket

“他弄丢了车票。

旁白 neutral

And I'm afraid he's very sick

而且我担心他病得很重。

If you don't mind, I'll take him home with me now."

要是你们不介意，我现在就带他回家。”

" You should be careful, ma'am!" said the stationmaster

“您可得小心点，夫人！”站长说。

" Oh no," said Mother brightly

“哦，没事的，”妈妈轻快地说。

" He's a great man in Russia

“他在俄罗斯是位了不起的人。

旁白 neutral

He writes books, beautiful books."

他写书，写很美很美的书。”

旁白 neutral

They all went home, and the Russian man went to sleep in Mother's room

他们全都回了家，那个俄罗斯男人睡在了妈妈的房间里。

It was the only room with a fireplace

那是唯一一个有壁炉的房间。

Later Bobbie showed the doctor into the room

后来，博比把医生领进了那个房间。

Inside she spotted Mother's big black suitcase

在里面，她看见了妈妈那只黑色的大手提箱。

It was usually locked, but now it was open

那箱子平时总是锁着的，可现在却开着。

There were men's clothes in it — her father's clothes

里面装着男人的衣服——她爸爸的衣服。

Why hadn't Father taken his clothes?

Bobbie's heart was beating horribly
