The chance came that afternoon

Mother was going to the nearest town to do some shopping

妈妈要去最近的镇上买东西。

Peter, Bobbie, and Phyllis were accompanying her

彼得、博比和菲利斯陪着她。

Bobbie wanted an excuse to stay home, but she couldn't think of one

博比想找个借口留在家里，可就是想不出来。

As they were leaving, her dress caught on a nail by the door

他们正要出门时，她的裙子被门边的钉子钩住了。

Mother said there was no time to change her dress

So Bobbie could not go with them

Hooray! Bobbie changed into an ordinary dress and went down to the railway

She walked along the tracks and past the platform

When she reached the place where the engines stopped, she hid behind a bush

Bobbie had the toy engine wrapped up in brown paper

博比用牛皮纸把玩具火车头包好了。

She waited patiently with it

她带着它耐心地等着。

When the next train came in and stopped, she went and stood next to the engine

She had never been so close to an engine before

The engine driver and the stoker did not see her

They were talking to Perks, the porter, who was on the other side of the tracks

" Excuse me," began Bobbie

But the men could not hear her because of the noise

Bobbie climbed onto the engine's step so they could hear her

At that moment the train began to move!

就在那时，火车开动了！

Bobbie fell inside, onto a pile of coal

博比跌了进去，摔在一堆煤上。

" Help! Help!" she cried

“救命！救命！”她喊道。

But the men still didn't see her or hear her

但那些人既没看见她，也没听见她喊。

" I shouldn't be here," she thought as the train went faster

“我本不该在这里，”火车加速时她想。

" I'll be in big trouble!"

“我会有大麻烦的！”

Bobbie put out her hand and touched the nearest arm, and the driver turned around quickly

博比伸出手，碰了碰最近的一只胳膊，司机猛地转过身来。

" What are you doing here?" he shouted

“你在这里干什么？”他喊道。

Bobbie began to cry

博比哭了起来。

The men took several minutes to calm Bobbie down and stop her crying

那两个人花了好几分钟才让博比平静下来，止住哭泣。

Then the stoker said," Now, tell us why you're here

接着司炉说：“好了，告诉我们你为什么来这里。

It's not every day a little girl tumbles into our steam engine!"

可不是每天都有小女孩摔进我们的蒸汽火车头里！”

Bobbie showed them Peter's toy engine

博比让他们看了彼得的玩具火车头。

" I... I wanted to ask you if you could fix this," she explained

“我……我本来想问问你们能不能修好这个，”她解释道。

" Everybody on the railway is so nice

“铁路上的每个人都这么好。

I didn't think you'd mind."

我以为你们不会介意的。”

The men examined the little engine. Bobbie waited

那两个人仔细看了看小火车头。博比等待着。

" What do you think, Jim?" said the driver at last

“你觉得呢，吉姆？”司机终于开口了。

" Can we help the little lady?"

“我们能帮帮这位小女士吗？”

The stoker grinned." I think we can."

司炉咧嘴笑了。“我想我们可以。”

" Oh, thank you!" cried Bobbie

“噢，谢谢你们！”博比叫了起来。

" But now we must get you home," said the driver

“不过现在我们得送你回家了，”司机说。

Bobbie stayed on the train until the next station

博比待在火车上，直到下一站。

The men put her on another train and sent her home

那两个人把她送上了另一趟火车，让她回家。

" Where have you been?" asked Phyllis and Peter

“你去哪儿了？”菲利斯和彼得问。

" To the station, of course," said Bobbie

“当然是去车站了，”博比说。

But she would not say another word

但她一个字也不肯多说了。

A few weeks later, Bobbie collected the toy engine

几周后，博比取回了玩具火车头。

Peter was very excited when he saw it

彼得看到它时，非常兴奋。

It was as good as new

它完好如新。

Then Bobbie told them about her great engine adventure
