Very early the next morning, Bobbie pulled Phyllis' hair to wake her

So Bobbie, Peter, and Phyllis sat down on a big comfortable stone in the grass

When Mother came to look for them at eight o'clock, she found them asleep in the sun

They went into the small room, which was next to the kitchen

At the bottom of the hill there was a wooden fence

There was the railway, with its shiny tracks, telegraph wires and posts, and signals

Just then the children heard a loud rumbling sound

A train came out of the tunnel

The pebbles on the track rattled and jumped as the train went by

" Ooh!" said Bobbie slowly

" It was like a great dragon going by and fanning us with its hot wings."

" Yes, I didn't think we'd be able to get so close to the trains!

“是啊，我没想到我们能离火车这么近！

That was amazing!" said Peter

太棒了！”彼得说。

" I wonder if the train was going to London

“不知道这火车是不是去伦敦的。

旁白 neutral

That's where Father is," said Phyllis

爸爸就在那儿呢。”菲莉丝说。

" Let's find out!" said Peter, and so they ran to the station

“咱们去看看！”彼得说，于是他们朝车站跑去。

They walked along the tracks, counted the telegraph posts, and jumped up onto the station platform

他们沿着轨道走，数着电线杆，然后跳上了车站月台。

On one side of the station yard was a huge pile of coal for the steam trains

在车站场院的一边，有一大堆供蒸汽火车使用的煤。

There was a white line behind the coal, at the top of the pile

在煤堆后面，堆顶的位置，画着一条白线。

Peter asked the station porter about the line

彼得向车站搬运工问起了那条线。

" It's to show how much coal is there

“这是用来标示这里有多少煤的。

Then we know if anybody steals some!" the porter said, smiling

这样我们就知道有没有人偷煤了！”搬运工笑着说。

Peter thought he was a nice, friendly person

When the children left, they were excited at the thought of coming back soon

离开时，孩子们一想到很快还能再来，就兴奋不已。
