" Tom!" yelled Aunt Polly. There was no answer." Tom!" she shouted again

“汤姆！”波莉姨妈喊道。没有回应。“汤姆！”她又喊道。

" Where is that boy?" she muttered

“那男孩去哪儿了？”她嘀咕道。

Aunt Polly looked everywhere for her young nephew, but he was nowhere to be found

波莉姨妈到处找她的小侄子，但哪里都找不到他。

He wasn't in his bedroom

他不在卧室里。

旁白 neutral

He wasn't in the yard, and he wasn't in the kitchen

他不在院子里，也不在厨房里。

Aunt Polly knew that if she couldn't see Tom, he was probably getting into trouble

波莉姨妈知道，只要看不见汤姆，他多半是在惹麻烦。

Tom was an orphan, and he loved mischief and adventure

汤姆是个孤儿，他喜欢恶作剧和冒险。

But sometimes he was too mischievous

但有时他太调皮了。

" When I find you, I'll give you a spanking." Aunt Polly shouted

“等我找到你，非打你屁股不可。”波莉姨妈喊道。

Then she grabbed the broom

然后她抓起扫帚。

" Where on earth has that boy gone?" Aunt Polly said to herself

波莉姨妈自言自语道：“那孩子到底跑哪儿去了？”

" T-o-m-m!" she screamed

她尖声喊道：“汤——姆——！”

Her glasses fell to the tip of her long, narrow nose

她的眼镜滑落到她细长鼻子的鼻尖上。

As she pushed the glasses back up, she spied something moving under the bed

她把眼镜往上推了推，发现床底下有什么东西在动。

" I've got you now, boy!"

“这下可抓住你了，小子！”

Aunt Polly took the broom handle and quickly pushed it under the bed

波莉姨妈抓起扫帚柄，迅速捅到床底下。

She wasn't surprised when she struck something, but it wasn't Tom

她捅到了什么东西，并不感到意外，但那不是汤姆。

Instead her cat sprang out from under the bed with an angry howl

相反，她的猫愤怒地嚎叫着从床底下蹿了出来。

Just then Aunt Polly heard footsteps behind her, and she turned to see Tom sneaking out of the closet

就在这时，波莉姨妈听到身后有脚步声，她转过身，看见汤姆正从壁橱里溜出来。

Aunt Polly grabbed the boy by his shirt and gave him a quick shake and a long look

波莉姨妈抓住汤姆的衬衫，使劲晃了一下，然后死死盯着他。

His hands were filthy, and he was grinning from ear to ear

他的双手脏兮兮的，笑得合不拢嘴。

" What were you doing in the closet?" asked Aunt Polly

“你在壁橱里干什么？”波莉姨妈问道。

" Nothing," said Tom sheepishly

“没什么，”汤姆不好意思地说。

" Nothing!" shouted Aunt Polly

“没什么！”波莉姨妈喊道。

旁白 neutral

" Look at your hands. Look at your mouth. Why are you so filthy?"

“看看你的手，看看你的嘴。怎么弄得这么脏？”

" I don't know," said Tom innocently

“我不知道，”汤姆无辜地说。

旁白 neutral

" Well, I know," said his aunt

“哼，我知道，”他姨妈说。

旁白 neutral

" It's jam, and I've told you a hundred times to leave that jam alone

“是果酱，我跟你说过一百遍了，别动那果酱。

Go back into the closet and get me my stick."

回壁橱里把我的棍子拿来。”

Tom gave Aunt Polly the willow stick reluctantly

汤姆不情愿地把柳条棍子递给了波莉姨妈。

" I'm really in trouble now," thought Tom

“这下我真的麻烦了，”汤姆心想。

As Aunt Polly raised the stick, Tom shouted," Look behind you! What's that?"

波莉姨妈举起棍子时，汤姆喊道：“看你身后！那是什么？”

Aunt Polly turned to look, and in a flash, Tom ran out the door and jumped over the fence

波莉姨妈转身去看，汤姆瞬间冲出门，跳过了篱笆。

" Oh, darn that boy!" Aunt Polly sighed, and then she began to laugh

“哦，这孩子真可恶！”波莉姨妈叹了口气，接着笑了起来。

" When will I learn? He's played that trick on me a thousand times

“我什么时候才能长记性？这招他对我用过上千次了。

旁白 neutral

People say ' an old fool is the biggest fool,' and they're right

人们说‘老傻瓜是最大的傻瓜’，说得一点儿没错。

I should know all his tricks by now."

我现在该看穿他所有把戏了。”

Aunt Polly worried about Tom

波莉姨妈为汤姆担忧。

She wanted him to become a good man, but he got into too much trouble and skipped a lot of school

她希望他成为一个好人，可他惹的麻烦太多，还老逃学。

" If I find out that boy has skipped school again, I'll have to punish him," she said to herself

I know the Bible is right because that boy is a very sinful creature

While Aunt Polly was blaming herself for Tom's faults, Tom was preparing to celebrate his mischief

就在波莉姨妈为汤姆的过错自责时，汤姆正打算庆祝他的捣蛋成果。

" I deserve a vacation," thought Tom

“我该给自己放个假，”汤姆心想。

" After all, I made Aunt Polly believe that something was actually behind her for the thousandth time

And they just don't teach you useful tricks like that at school."

So Tom skipped school, and he had a very good time

Tom got home just in time to help Jim with his chores

Jim was the young slave who helped Aunt Polly with the housework

At dinner Aunt Polly wanted to punish Tom for eating the jam and fooling her with his old trick

So she asked Tom many questions, hoping to catch him in a lie

于是她问了汤姆许多问题，希望抓住他撒谎的把柄。

" Tom, it was quite warm at school today, wasn't it?"

" Oh yes, ma'am. It was very warm," answered Tom

“哦，是的，姨妈。非常热。”汤姆回答。

" Didn't you want to swim in the river?" asked Aunt Polly

“你就没想去河里游个泳？”波莉姨妈问。

Tom nervously looked at Aunt Polly's face, but it told him nothing

汤姆紧张地看了看波莉姨妈的脸，但什么也看不出来。

He said," I did want to go swimming, but I had to go to school."

他说：“我确实想去游泳，但我得去上学。”

Aunt Polly felt Tom's shirt collar

波莉姨妈摸了摸汤姆的衬衫领子。

It was dry, and for a minute she just stared at Tom

领子是干的，她盯着汤姆看了好一会儿。

" The dry collar is a trick I've used a million times, but she's never figured it out," thought Tom

“干领子这招我都用了无数次了，可她从来就没识破过。”汤姆心想。

He tried to hide his smile as he watched his aunt's face carefully

他仔细看着姨妈的脸，努力忍住笑。

Was Aunt Polly about to punish him, or had he fooled her once again?
