Once upon a time there was a small village deep in the mountains

To visitors, the village looked peaceful and beautiful

However the people in the village were very afraid

They were afraid of the tigers living in the mountains

The people in the village went into the mountains to hunt for food

But the tigers did not like that

但老虎们不喜欢这样。

The tigers frightened and chased the people out

老虎们吓唬并追赶人们。

The village decided to hold a meeting

村子决定召开一次会议。

They wanted to get rid of the tigers in the mountains

他们想除掉山里的老虎。

" We are tired of living in fear!" shouted one man

“我们受够了活在恐惧中！”一个人喊道。

" What if the tigers come to our village and eat our children?" cried a woman

“要是老虎来到咱们村子，把孩子吃了，可怎么办？”一个女人喊道。

Finally a young man stood up

最后，一个年轻人站了出来。

" We must make a trap to catch the tigers!" he said

“我们得设个陷阱来抓老虎！”他说。

" What kind of trap?" asked another man

“什么样的陷阱？”另一个人问。

" We must dig very deep holes

“我们必须挖很深很深的洞。

The tigers will fall into them, but they will not be able to climb out," said the young man

老虎会掉进去，但它们爬不出来。” 年轻人说。

Everyone cheered at the wonderful idea

听到这个好主意，大家都欢呼起来。

The village worked day and night digging holes

全村人日夜不停地挖洞。

They dug holes around the village and up the road to the mountain

At last they were done

One day a traveler was passing by the village

一天，一位旅行者正从村子经过。

As he walked by a big hole in the ground, he heard a low roar

当他走过地上的一个大坑时，听到了一声低沉的吼叫。

The traveler stopped and looked down the hole

旅行者停下脚步，朝坑里看去。

At the bottom of the hole was a tiger!

坑底竟有一只老虎！

" Oh please, kind sir, help me!" begged the tiger

“哦，求求您，好心人，救救我吧！”老虎哀求道。

" I promise never to forget your kindness if only you will help me!" cried the tiger

“我保证永远不会忘记您的恩情，只要您肯帮我！”老虎喊道。

The traveler felt sorry for the tiger

旅行者对老虎心生怜悯。

He dragged a felled tree and lowered it into the hole

他拖来一棵倒下的树，把它放进坑里。

The tiger climbed out of the trap

老虎从陷阱里爬了出来。

旁白 neutral

" Thank you for your kindness," said the tiger

“谢谢您的恩情。”老虎说。

" And now, I am going to eat you."

“现在，我要吃掉你了。”

" But why? I just saved your life!" cried the traveler

“可是为什么？我才刚救了你一命呀！”旅行者喊道。

" Because humans made those traps to catch tigers, and you are a human," said the tiger

“因为人类设下那些陷阱来抓老虎，而你正是人类。”老虎说。

The man was very frightened, but he had an idea

旅行者非常害怕，但他想到了一个主意。

" It's not fair, Mr. Tiger, to judge one person the same as everyone else," the man said bravely

“老虎先生，把一个人和其他人等同看待，这不公平。”旅行者勇敢地说。

" Let's hear what others have to say about this situation."

The tiger agreed and the two of them set off

The man and the tiger went to an ox. They told him what happened

旅行者和老虎去找一头牛，告诉了他事情的经过。

After listening the ox said," Well, I have to agree with the tiger

听完之后，牛说：“唉，我得同意老虎的看法。

Humans are cruel and mean

人类既残忍又刻薄。

They tie us up and make us work hard all the time."

他们把我们拴起来，让我们一直不停地干重活。”

Next they went to a pine tree. The pine tree listened to their story

接着他们来到一棵松树前。松树听了他们的讲述。

Then it said," Well, I have to agree with the tiger. Humans are unkind!

然后它说：“唉，我不得不同意老虎的看法。人类真不友善！

They cut us down and throw us into the fire. Humans have no heart!"

他们把我们砍倒，扔进火里。人类真是狠心！”

" You see? Humans are bad! Now, I'm going to eat you," the tiger said

“你看？人类就是坏！现在，我要吃掉你了。”老虎说。

The tiger was about to attack, when a rabbit came hopping by

老虎正要扑上去，这时一只兔子蹦蹦跳跳地过来了。

" What's going on?" the rabbit asked

“出什么事了？”兔子问道。

旁白 neutral

" Oh please, Mr. Rabbit," cried the traveler." Listen and judge our case."

“哦，求求您，兔子先生，”旅行者喊道，“请听听我们的情况，给我们评评理。”

" Fine, but we must hop back to where this all started," answered the rabbit

“好吧，但我们得跳回到这一切开始的地方去。”兔子回答。

" Where were you before this human rescued you?" the rabbit asked the tiger

“在这个人救你之前，你在哪里？”兔子问老虎。

The tiger pointed to the trap

老虎指了指那个陷阱。

" I must see exactly where you were," said the rabbit

“我必须看清楚你当时具体在哪儿。”兔子说。

So the tiger jumped into the deep hole

于是老虎跳进了那个深坑里。

" Was this felled tree in the hole when you fell into it, Mr. Tiger?" asked the rabbit

“老虎先生，你掉进坑里的时候，这根砍倒的树干就在里面吗？”兔子问。

" No, no. There was nothing here," answered the tiger

“不，不。那时这里什么都没有。”老虎回答。

So the traveler and the rabbit pulled the tree out

于是旅行者和兔子合力把树干拉了出来。

" You were trapped in this hole, with no one to help you

“你被困在这个坑里，没有人帮你。

旁白 neutral

Then this kind man comes along and helps you, and now you want to kill him?

然后这位好心人路过这里救了你，而现在你却想杀掉他？

That is not kind, Mr. Tiger," said the rabbit

这样可不宽厚啊，老虎先生。”兔子说。

" You complain that humans are unkind, but you are not being fair

“你抱怨人类不友善，但你却没有做到公平公正。

You must not judge someone you have never met."

你不应该去评判一个你从未见过的人。”

The tiger remained ungrateful to the man who saved his life

老虎对它的救命恩人依然毫无感激之情。

So the traveler and the rabbit left the tiger in the hole and walked away

于是，旅行者和兔子把老虎留在了坑里，离开了。
