On a fine day, a farmer and his son headed for the market with their donkey

They planned to sell their donkey at the market

On their way, they met some travelers

路上，他们遇到了一些旅人。

They have a donkey but don't ride on it

他们有驴却不骑。

Ha-ha! What a useless donkey!" one said

哈哈！真是头没用的驴！”一个人说。

" Yes, and a foolish master too," the other laughed

“是啊，主人也够蠢的，”另一个笑道。

The father felt bad because of the mean words of the men

父亲听了这些刻薄话，心里很难受。

So, he asked his son to ride on the donkey

于是，他让儿子骑上驴。

" Son, ride on the donkey."

“儿子，骑上驴吧。”

Soon, they passed an old woman

很快，他们经过一位老妇人。

She sat on a bench by the road

她坐在路边的长椅上。

" That son is very rude," she said

“那个儿子很没礼貌，”她说。

" He makes his father walk while he rides on the donkey."

“他让他父亲走路，自己却骑在驴上。”

" Son, get off the donkey now

“儿子，快从驴上下来。

I'd better ride on the donkey instead," the father said

还是换我来骑驴吧，”父亲说。

So the father rode on the donkey, and his son walked by his side

于是父亲骑上了驴，儿子跟在他身旁走。

Later they met two ladies

后来，他们遇到两位女士。

" Look at them

“看看他们。

The father must not be a good father," said one lady

那位父亲一定不是个好父亲，”一位女士说。

" Right. Look how tired the boy is

“是啊，看那个男孩多累啊。

His son should ride on the donkey," said the other

他的儿子应该骑驴才对。”另一个人说。

" Son, we'd both better ride on the donkey," the father said

“儿子，我们俩最好都骑上驴吧。”父亲说。

Then he and his son both rode on the donkey

于是他和儿子都骑上了驴。

Soon, they met two men

不久，他们遇到了两个男人。

" How cruel! Look how they treat that poor donkey."

“太残忍了！看看他们怎么对待那头可怜的驴。”

" Yes, the donkey cannot carry two people at a time

“是啊，驴一次驮不了两个人。

It looks so pale and tired

它看起来那么苍白疲惫。

Poor donkey!" the men said to each other

可怜的驴！”那两个男人互相说道。

The father and his son looked at the donkey

父亲和儿子看了看驴。

旁白 neutral

" Our donkey does look a bit tired," said the father

“我们的驴确实看着有点累了。”父亲说。

" What should we do?" asked the son

“我们该怎么办？”儿子问。

旁白 neutral

" Let's put the donkey on our shoulders," the father decided

“我们把驴扛在肩上吧。”父亲决定道。

They tied the donkey's front legs together, and the back legs

他们把驴的前腿绑在一起，后腿也绑在一起。

Then they carried the donkey on their shoulders

然后他们把驴扛在了肩上。

When they came to a bridge, some other people saw them and laughed

当他们走到一座桥时，另外一些人看见了，都大笑起来。

" Ooh, ha-ha! Look! Ha-ha, hoo-hee! Woo-hoo!

“哦呵呵，哈哈！看哪！哈哈，呵呵，呼呼！

What a funny pair!"

多可笑的一对儿啊！”

They laughed so loudly that they frightened the donkey

他们笑得那么大声，把驴给吓坏了。

The donkey kicked his legs and slipped off their shoulders

驴子踢腾着腿，从他们肩上滑落下去。

The donkey rolled into the river and drowned

驴滚进了河里，淹死了。

旁白 neutral

" Oh my, our donkey is dead!" cried the father

“天哪，我们的驴死了！”父亲哭喊道。

On their way back home, the father whispered something to his son

在回家的路上，父亲对儿子轻声说了些什么。

" My son, when you try to please everybody, you please nobody in the end."

“儿子，当你试图取悦所有人时，最终你谁也取悦不了。”
