Anansi the Spider sat in a tall tree, watching Goat work in his garden

蜘蛛阿南西坐在高高的树上，看着山羊在他的花园里劳作。

" Goat's melons look delicious!" thought Anansi

“山羊的瓜看起来真好吃！” 阿南西心想。

The spider loved fruit, but he was too lazy to grow anything himself

这只蜘蛛爱吃水果，但他自己太懒了，什么都不愿意种。

When Goat left, Anansi dropped into the garden

山羊离开后，阿南西跳进了花园里。

With a thorn, he carved a hole in a melon

他用一根刺在一个瓜上钻了个洞。

He crawled inside, and began to eat — and eat and eat!

他爬了进去，开始大吃特吃——吃啊吃啊吃！

Anansi rubbed his full belly

阿南西揉了揉自己圆鼓鼓的肚子。

" Goat will be back soon," he said

“山羊很快就要回来了，” 他说。

" I must go."

He tried to crawl out through the hole

他试着从洞里爬出来。

But now he was too fat!

" I'll wait until I'm thin again."

Anansi grew bored while he waited

When Goat returned, Anansi got an idea

山羊回来时，阿南西有了个主意。

He loved to play tricks — he could trick Goat!

他爱搞恶作剧——他可以捉弄山羊！

Goat picked up the melon

山羊捡起了瓜。

" Ow!" Anansi yelped

“哎哟！” 阿南西叫道。

" Who said that?" Goat cried, looking around

“谁在说话？” 山羊喊着，四下张望。

" Me," replied the melon

“我，” 瓜回答道。

旁白 neutral

Goat blinked." Melons can't talk!"

山羊眨了眨眼。“瓜不会说话！”

旁白 neutral

" Yes, we can."

“不，我们会。”

旁白 neutral

" This is incredible!" said Goat

“这太不可思议了！” 山羊说。

旁白 neutral

" I must show the queen!"

“我得去告诉女王！”

旁白 neutral

He hurried toward the palace

他匆匆朝宫殿走去。

Rattlesnake saw him

响尾蛇看见了他。

" Where are you going?" she called

“你要去哪儿？”响尾蛇喊道。

旁白 neutral

" I'm taking this melon to the queen," replied Goat." It talks."

“我要把这个瓜带给女王，”山羊回答，“它会说话。”

" That's silly," Rattlesnake laughed." As silly as — "

“真傻啊，”响尾蛇大笑，“傻得就像——”

" A kind rattlesnake!" said the melon

“一条友善的响尾蛇！”瓜说道。

旁白 neutral

Rattlesnake scowled." Who said that?"

响尾蛇皱起眉头。“谁在说话？”

旁白 neutral

" I told you — this melon talks!" said Goat

“我告诉过你——这个瓜会说话！”山羊说。

" Amazing!" said Rattlesnake

“太神奇了！”响尾蛇说。

旁白 neutral

" I'll go with you."

“我和你一起去。”

旁白 neutral

Goat and Rattlesnake headed toward the palace

山羊和响尾蛇朝王宫走去。

More animals heard the melon talking

更多动物听到了瓜在说话。

They followed Goat and Rattlesnake to the palace

他们跟着山羊和响尾蛇前往王宫。

Goat bowed." Your Majesty, we brought you a melon."

山羊鞠了一躬。“陛下，我们给您带来了一个瓜。”

The queen frowned." I already have plenty of melons."

女王皱起眉头。“我已经有很多瓜了。”

" This melon is unique," explained Goat proudly

“这个瓜很特别，”山羊骄傲地解释道。

" It can talk!"

“它会说话！”

旁白 neutral

The queen stepped closer

女王走近了些。

" Speak, melon!" she ordered

“说话，瓜！”她命令道。

旁白 neutral

But the melon stayed quiet

但瓜保持安静。

" Melon! I order you to speak!"

“瓜！我命令你说话！”

旁白 neutral

Still, the melon was silent

瓜依然沉默。

旁白 neutral

" What a silly melon!" the queen snapped

“真是个傻瓜！”女王厉声说道。

" Silly?" echoed the melon

“傻瓜？”瓜回应道。

旁白 neutral

" You're the one who's talking to a melon!"

“你才是那个在跟瓜说话的人！”

The queen's face turned bright red

女王的脸涨得通红。

She picked up the melon and flung it with all her might

她捡起那个瓜，用尽全力扔了出去。

The melon hit a tree in Goat's garden and shattered into pieces

瓜砸到了山羊花园里的一棵树上，摔成了碎片。

Anansi crawled out of the melon

阿南西从瓜里爬了出来。

" I'm thin again!" he said happily

“我又变瘦了！”他高兴地说。

旁白 neutral

" I'm hungry too." He scurried up a nearby banana tree

“我也饿了。”他快速爬上了附近的一棵香蕉树。

Goat returned to his garden

山羊回到了他的花园。

" Dumb melons! I'm never listening to you again!"

“笨瓜！我再也不会听你们说话了！”

" Good idea," called a banana

“好主意，”一根香蕉喊道。

" Talking melons always bring trouble!"
