Perda gasped." A talisman! Just like the one Morb used to control the trolls!"

The Roodian handed the talisman to Wyssa

" It blocks the effects of the Bewilderment spell

Zann took a few careful steps forward, waving a hand to clear the haze." I think I see something..."

Zann's voice trailed off; his eyes widened in horror

赞恩的声音越来越小，他惊恐地睁大了眼睛。

A scatter beast was stepping out of the mist!

Zann's heart raced. His head filled with memories of his last scatter beast encounter

赞恩的心狂跳起来，脑海里满是上次遭遇散播兽的记忆。

He tried to speak, to warn his friends

他想开口说话，警告朋友们。

But his voice seemed frozen in his throat

但他的声音似乎卡在喉咙里了。

" Was that Roodian servant working for Morb?" he thought with a shudder

" Did he send us straight into a trap?"

The scatter beast paused, its tentacle waving lazily as it shambled closer

散播兽停了一下，一根触手懒洋洋地晃着，蹒跚着靠得更近了。

" No!" Venna shouted. But Zann barely noticed; all he could do was stare at the horrifying creature moving toward him

“不！”雯娜大喊。但赞恩几乎没注意到；他能做的只是盯着那个正朝他移动的可怕生物。

Suddenly there was a loud squawk. Zing flew around Zann and the others, spitting fire and whistling urgently

突然传来一声响亮的嘎嘎叫。小星绕着赞恩和其他人飞，喷着火，急促地吹着口哨。

" Zing, what are you doing?" Zann mumbled, barely feeling the burn of Zing's flames." Save yourself."

“小星，你在干什么？”赞恩嘟囔着，几乎感觉不到小星火焰的灼烧。“救你自己吧。”

Zing let out a chirp of irritation and flew out of sight

小星发出一声恼怒的喳喳声，飞得不见了影。

For a moment Zann thought the dragon had taken his advice and escaped the way they'd come in

有那么一瞬间，赞恩以为龙听了他的劝，从他们进来的路逃走了。

Then Zann heard another whistle. A second later something thumped into his back — hard

然后赞恩听到又一声口哨。一秒钟后，有东西重重地撞到他的背上。

" Hey!" Zann blurted out as he stumbled forward

He was about to fall right on top of the scatter beast!" No — oof!"

他就要直接跌在散播兽身上了！“不——哎哟！”

He landed hard on the stone floor of the chamber

他重重地摔在了石室的地板上。

" Huh?" Zann muttered. He couldn't see the scatter beast anymore

“嗯？”赞恩咕哝道。他看不见那只散播兽了。

Zann leaped to his feet and backed up a few steps

赞恩猛地跳起来，后退了几步。

Suddenly the scatter beast was there again, in the same spot where Zann had just fallen!

突然，散播兽又出现在原地，正是赞恩刚刚摔倒的地方！

Zing landed beside the scatter beast. The beast didn't seem to notice the dragon at all

小星落在散播兽旁边。那怪物似乎根本没注意到这条龙。

Zann's wild heartbeat slowed. For the first time, he realized he wasn't feeling the pain and other crazy magical effects he'd felt in Fardark

" It's an illusion!" Zann shouted with relief." The scatter beast isn't real!"

He glanced around. Everyone else, except Zing, was staring straight ahead, looking terrified

他环顾四周。除了小星，其他人全都直视前方，一脸恐惧。

" S-scatter beast?" Perda's eyes never left the blank spot right in front of her

" I'd be happy to see a scatter beast right now

Maybe it would scare away that huge swarm of tickle bugs!"

" Tickle bugs?" Zann wrinkled his nose. Tickle bugs had ten legs and whirligig wings and liked to land on people

“搔痒虫？”赞恩皱起鼻子。搔痒虫长着十条腿和旋转的翅膀，喜欢落在人身上。

They were annoying, but they weren't scary. Well, except to Perda

Suddenly Zann remembered that Perda was terrified of the goofy insects. He'd once scared her with one

The two of them jumped in front of each person, revealing that whatever each was seeing wasn't real

" Thank goodness!" Gliss stumbled backward." I was sure that thunder charger was going to eat me!"

Darb nodded." I thought I was about to fall into a deep, dark hole."

Zann waited for Wyssa's answer. What could possibly terrify someone like her?
