Perda smiled as Zing shot another burst of flame at Zann
"Good old Zing," she thought.

Then her smile faded. She was troubled by what
Mellis had just told them.
旁白 neutral
" I don't care much about what happens to Vilkor," she thought
" But Mellis cares about him, and I care about Mellis
Zann and I haven't known her that long, but she already
feels like a true friend."
旁白 neutral
" Let's decide what to do," she said after Zing settled down
and Zann magically healed his burns.
旁白 neutral
" Should we return to Magica, or stay and try to convince Zira to
share the truth about magic with everyone?"
旁白 neutral
Zann shrugged." I don't like the thought of Zira and Vilkor running things
But it's not our world. Maybe it's none of our business."
Perda felt more troubled than ever. Could Zann be right?
" If Mellis can convince her uncle and Zira to rule for the benefit of all
maybe it wouldn't be so bad," she said.
旁白 neutral
" But still, leaving now doesn't seem right."
She glanced over to see what Mellis thought
But Mellis hardly seemed to be listening. She was gazing out the window
" What's wrong?" Perda asked
Mellis sighed." I was just thinking about the pendant I lost."
Perda recalled hearing Mellis mention that she'd lost something
" What kind of pendant?" she asked
" It was the only thing I still had that belonged to my mother," Mellis said sadly
" I noticed it was gone shortly after you two arrived
I must have broken the cord while digging the well."
" We could zap out there later and help you search," Zann said
" We should probably check on the wormhole anyway."
" We haven't decided yet if we're leaving right away," Perda reminded him
" I know," Zann said." But we don't even know if we can get
to the wormhole by the well.
旁白 neutral
If we can't, we'll have to zap all the way back out to the mines."
" The mines?" Mellis echoed." What do you mean?"
While Zann told her about the wormhole he'd discovered near the mines
Perda paced the room and thought about what to do.
旁白 neutral
She didn't trust Zira, or Vilkor, for that matter
How could they even think about leaving Mellis — and all
of Terrica—in their greedy hands?
旁白 neutral
She was still pondering the same question a few hours later at a sumptuous
feast in the banquet hall that overlooked Zira's courtyard garden.
旁白 neutral
The purple berries on the bush outside seemed to glow as
a moon rose in the darkening sky.
旁白 neutral
Zann pushed back his chair." I'd better take Zing for a walk," he said to Zira
" He gets restless and starts setting things on fire if he's kept indoors
for too long. May I be excused?"
旁白 neutral
" Of course," Zira said before returning her attention to her
conversation with the woman beside her.
旁白 neutral
A few minutes later, Mellis excused herself as well, saying she wanted
to prepare sleeping chambers for Perda and Zann.
旁白 neutral
Perda forced herself to wait several more minutes before standing up
" I'm exhausted," she said, faking a yawn." I think I'll head straight to bed."
She hurried outside and found Zann and Mellis waiting. Zing was there too
" Are you sure we should bring him?" she asked as the
little dragon flew in a circle overhead.
旁白 neutral
" He tends to attract attention."
" I'm not leaving him behind again," Zann said
Perda shrugged." Okay, you're right. We should stick
together from now on."
旁白 neutral
They zapped to the well. The villagers were gone
but the area wasn't completely deserted.
旁白 neutral
A pack of gorzogs was there, circling a large metal cage
A man cowered inside the cage, dodging as the gorzogs
occasionally stuck a clawed paw in to try to grab him.
旁白 neutral
" It's Trof, the plonk farmer!" Perda cried
Trof stared at the kids with terror in his eyes
There was a long scratch on his face and another
on his arm. "Help me!" he cried.
旁白 neutral
Perda didn't like Trof. But she hated to see anyone suffer
She rubbed her hands together
" Get out of here!" she yelled as she sent several
fireballs toward the gorzogs.
旁白 neutral
The creatures jumped in surprise and dodged the fireballs
But they didn't run away
Perda and Zann tried creating a loud horn sound next
and then bright, flashing lights.
旁白 neutral
" Stop," Mellis cried, pointing
" All you're doing is attracting more! Gorzogs are practically fearless."
Perda glanced toward the horizon, where more gorzogs
were creeping into view out of the darkness.
旁白 neutral
" We'd better zap away," she said." Maybe we can figure
out how to zap this guy with us."
旁白 neutral
" No, wait," Zann said
" The gorzogs seemed to react to Zing's song before
remember? Zing! Try singing!"
旁白 neutral
The little dragon started whistling. At first
nothing happened.
旁白 neutral
" A fire whistler's song doesn't usually work on
otherworldly creatures," Perda reminded Zann.
旁白 neutral
" Wait," Mellis said." Look!"
One of the gorzogs had stopped to stare up
at Zing. Several others did the same.
旁白 neutral
Their eyes were glassy
A couple of them drooled slightly as they swayed
in time with the dragon's song.
旁白 neutral
" It's working!" Perda exclaimed. She and Zann
rushed to the cage.
旁白 neutral
As soon as Trof was free, he raced away without
even thanking the kids.
旁白 neutral
" Let's get out of here," Zann said." We'll come back later
when the gorzogs are gone."
旁白 neutral
Perda nodded, but Mellis didn't respond
She appeared to be listening carefully to Zing's song
Then she opened her mouth — and started to sing!
Her voice echoed the dragon's song almost perfectly!
The gorzogs heard it too. They swayed
and turned to face her adoringly.
旁白 neutral
After a moment Mellis stepped forward
and patted one on its scruffy head!
旁白 neutral
" Wow!" Zann exclaimed
Suddenly Zira zapped into view
" Uh-oh!" Perda thought." We're in trouble!"
