she snapped her fingers.

The gate in Trof's new fence burst open

Perda hopped toward a large plonk and waved her

shackled wrists. "Go! Be free!"

The plonk spotted the open gate. With a loud squeal

it raced through.

Several other plonks charged after it

" Hey, get back here!" Trof cried. He ran after them

finally letting go of Mellis.

" Unshackle," Perda said to free Anso." Quick! Grab Mellis

and then hold onto me."

Anso looked confused. But Mellis was running toward them

" Grab Perda's arm and hold on tightly!" she said." Hurry!"

Mellis and Anso held onto Perda, who whistled for Zing

The dragon flew toward her. But Trof spotted him passing overhead

The farmer reached up and grabbed the dragon out of the air

slinging him into a large crate nearby and slamming it shut.

Perda gasped." Zing!"

Mellis squeezed her arm." Trof is coming! We have to go!"

Trof ran toward them, looking furious. Perda couldn't stand

the thought of leaving Zing behind.

But if she hesitated, they would all be trapped again

When she, Mellis, and Anso landed, she looked around

She bit her lip, feeling worried

Just then several people hurried into view, talking loudly

" I heard Sir Vilkor is giving away special golden staffs to celebrate

the creation of his new home!" one woman exclaimed.

A man clapped his hands eagerly." Let's go — I want one!"

" Sir Vilkor is so generous," another man said

" Life is better, now that he can bless us with his magical abilities!"

Perda scowled as she listened. How dare Vilkor and Zira keep

the secret of magic to themselves!

She was tempted to jump out of hiding and teach those

people to do magic just as she'd done with Trof.

" Wait," Mellis whispered, seeming to guess

what she was thinking.

" Let's follow them to this new house they mentioned

Maybe Zann is there."

Perda wondered if she could be right

Zira had ordered Krub to take Zann to work in a mine

She and Mellis sneaked along behind the group

They walked to a huge, fancy mansion near the town square

Mellis looked surprised." That wasn't there before

" He probably used up all his magic energy doing so," Perda said

" Either that, or Zira helped him." She still couldn't believe

how powerful Zira seemed to be.

That made it even more important to make sure Zira didn't

keep the secret of magic from the citizens of Terrica.

" We can worry about that once we're all together

and safe," Perda told herself.

" I'm sure we can come up with a plan to reveal

the truth to everyone."

Perda and Mellis hid behind a tree and watched people

lining up in front of Vilkor's new mansion.

" Maybe we should go inside and ask him

to help us," Mellis whispered.

旁白 neutral

" My uncle isn't a bad person."

Perda wasn't so sure. Vilkor might not be evil, but he

was willing to go along with Zira's evil plan.

The only thing he seemed to care about was

making his own life nicer.

" What if Zira is in there with him?" Perda whispered

Mellis looked worried." I didn't think of that."

She'd just felt an invisible tug, as if a giant hand was

pulling her farther down the street.

" Hey, what's going on?" Mellis took several

steps in that direction.

" I didn't mean to walk this way!"

Perda gasped, recognizing the feeling

" It feels like a Compel spell! They're not allowed in Magica."

She struggled to stop herself from moving, but the

spell forced her to follow Mellis.

" Let's zap away!" Perda said." That might free us from the spell!"

Just then two large goons burst into view

" It's them!" one goon shouted." Grab them!"

Perda lunged for Mellis, hoping to zap away

But her shackles prevented her from moving fast enough

The goons grabbed both girls

As she struggled against her captor, Perda noticed he

had odd purple marks on his face.

The other goon had similar marks

" I can't zap while he's holding me," she thought

to see Mellis snap her fingers.

A rock appeared in her hand, and she threw it

at the goon holding Perda.

It hit him in the shoulder

" Ow!" he yelped, letting go of Perda

Perda hesitated. She hated to abandon Mellis

so soon after freeing her from Trof.

Still, she couldn't help anyone if she was trapped herself

As the goon reached for her, Perda snapped her fingers." Zap!"
