The hoof beasts carried Zann and his friends away from the rocky gully into more sand dunes

Then they passed some scrubby trees

After that they crossed the grassland Darb and Perda had mentioned

" Let's look over there," Perda called, pointing to some hills

They rode to the hills, which at first were gently rolling and mostly sand

Then the slopes got steeper and rockier, with a few plants dotted here and there

Perda peered into a cave

" Maybe," Zann said, remembering what had happened with the levitation spell and the airberry juice

A Red Share hit Zann, almost knocking him off his hoof beast

It was from Gliss. She was terrified!

" Zann!" Darb halted his hoof beast." Are you okay?"

“赞恩！”达布停下蹄兽，“你没事吧？”

Zann gulped for breath as the Red Share started to fade

赞恩倒抽一口气，红色共享开始消退。

" I'm fine," he said." But I'm not sure about Gliss."

“我没事，”他说，“但我不确定格丽丝怎么样了。”

He told them about the Share

他把共享的事告诉了他们。

" Oh, no!" Perda cried." We have to find her!"

" Could you tell where it was coming from?" Darb asked

Zann closed his eyes

He could still feel Gliss' terror in the back of his mind

He turned his head, and it faded

When he turned his head the other way, the Share got a little stronger

He opened his eyes." That way, I think," he said, pointing

" I hope Gliss is all right." Darb sounded worried

" I wonder if Wyssa is with her," Perda said

" If not, then maybe that's why she's scared."

Darb nodded." I'd be scared too, if I were all alone in the Far Frontier."

Zann didn't say anything

Gliss hadn't just felt scared — she'd felt terrified

Would she feel that way just from being alone? He wasn't sure

They emerged from the hills

Ahead of them the desert stretched into the distance

Perda shaded her eyes against the blinding sunlight

" I don't see anything," she said

She looked anxious." Or anyone

Do you really think Gliss could be anywhere out there?"

" Look." Darb pointed." There are more hills over there."

“看。”达布指着说。“那边还有更多的山丘。”

Zann squinted through the hot, hazy sunlight

赞恩透过炙热而朦胧的阳光眯眼看去。

" That's the direction the Share seems to be leading us," he said

“共享似乎正把我们往那个方向引，”他说。

" Come on, let's hurry."

The hoof beasts seemed to sense the kids' urgency

The animals broke into a faster gait

Their hooves pounded the sand, kicking up clouds of dust

Zann held on to his beast's long, silky mane, hoping he wouldn't bounce off

" At least Morb can't sneak up on us out here — there's nowhere for him to hide," Perda joked weakly

"至少莫布在这里没法偷袭我们——他根本没地方躲。"珀达无力地开着玩笑。

" Why do you think he came here?" Zann glanced around at the sun-bleached sand

"你觉得他为什么会来这里？"赞恩环顾着被太阳晒得发白的沙地。

" Could he really be searching for the Source?"

"他真的是在寻找本源吗？"

" Maybe." Darb shrugged

"也许吧。"达布耸了耸肩。

" That sounds like something he'd do."

" Laddno will be mad if someone else finds it first."

Zann tried to laugh at his own remark

But he was too worried about Gliss to do more than cough

They were nearing the next set of hills

The hills were steep and rocky, with spiky plants clinging to them and a few scrawny trees growing sideways out of pockets of soil

Perda looked up." I'm not sure these beasts can climb these hills."

" They won't have to climb them." Darb pointed

“它们不需要爬上去。”达布指了指。

" I see a trail that leads up to the top."

“我看到一条通往山顶的小路。”

Zann followed as Darb and his hoof beast led the way into a narrow opening between two hills

赞恩跟着达布和他的蹄兽，走进两座山丘间一道狭窄的入口。

The shade of the trail felt good after the searing heat of the desert sun

在沙漠烈日的灼晒之后，小径上的阴凉让人舒爽。

But Zann felt a little nervous

但赞恩感到有些紧张。

It was hard to see more than a few strides ahead

What if they ran into another sand beast in here?

What if they ran into Morb?

The hoof beasts seemed nervous too

Zann's beast, looking alert, had its head way up in the air

Its ears swiveled, and it let out a loud snort

它的耳朵转动着，发出一声响亮的鼻息。

Perda cried out as her beast suddenly jumped forward with its ears pricked

珀达惊叫一声，她的坐骑突然竖起耳朵向前蹿去。

" Why are they acting like this?" she exclaimed

“它们为什么这样？” 她喊道。

Darb patted his beast

达布拍了拍他的坐骑。

Then he glanced back at the others

然后他回头瞥了其他人一眼。

" Maybe the hoof beasts don't like being in such an enclosed space," he said

“也许蹄兽不喜欢待在这种封闭的地方，” 他说。

" They're used to being out in the open desert or grasslands

“它们习惯了待在开阔的沙漠或草原上。

They're probably worried that — "

He broke off with a strangled cry

Zann started to call to him

But before he could, he felt something tighten around his chest

It was a rope!

" Hey!" Zann shouted

“嘿！”赞恩喊道。

He tried to shake off the rope, but it was pinning his arms to his sides

他想甩掉绳子，但绳子把他的胳膊牢牢捆在身体两侧。

A second later he felt the rope jerk him right off the hoof beast's back

紧接着，他感觉绳子猛地一拽，把他从蹄兽背上拉了下来。

He slammed into the rocky ground with a grunt

他闷哼一声，重重摔在岩石地面上。

Out of the corner of his eye, Zann saw that both of his friends were in the same situation

赞恩从眼角余光看到，他的两个朋友也遭遇了同样的情况。

He squirmed desperately, trying to free himself

他拼命扭动身体，试图挣脱。

But the rope was too tight — and it was thick and strong

但绳子太紧了——而且又粗又结实。

" Someone lassoed us!" Perda cried

“有人用套索套住了我们！”珀达喊道。

" Who was it? Hey, show yourselves!"

“是谁？嘿，出来！”

Several people stepped out of the shadows of the rocky hills

几个人从岩石山丘的阴影里走了出来。

The people were tall and lean

这些人又高又瘦。

Their loose clothes were the same color as the sand

Wide-brimmed hats hid part of their faces, though Zann was pretty sure those faces were painted with clay or paint

He'd seen pictures of such tribes in his parents' book

They were nomads who were able to survive in this rough land

Zann watched nervously as one of the strangers stepped forward

看到一个陌生人走上前，赞恩紧张地盯着。

" You should not have come here," the man said darkly

“你们不该来这里，”那人阴沉地说。

" Your friend has caused us great sorrow, and now you must die."

“你们的朋友给我们带来了巨大的悲痛，现在你们必须死。”
