Angry people held banners and signs. Some signs were magical, with flashing messages that changed words or colors

Others were plain signs written by hand

There had been many protests lately, and now the king and queen were trying to calm down the crowd

A square-jawed man watched from a balcony overlooking the park

一个方下巴的男人从俯瞰公园的阳台上观望着。

His big hands rested on a railing, and a door behind him was open to an opulent apartment

他的大手搭在栏杆上，身后一扇门敞开着，通向一间豪华的公寓。

" Void rights," he muttered." What a concept. Seems popular though."

“虚空权利，”他嘟囔道，“真是个概念。不过看起来挺受欢迎的。”

Suddenly he gasped, his knees buckling as his head exploded with pain

突然，他倒吸一口气，膝盖一软，头部剧痛欲裂。

Pressing his hands to his head, he staggered through the door and collapsed onto a sofa

他双手按着头，踉跄地穿过门，瘫倒在沙发上。

A moment later the pain faded, and his eyes opened wide with surprise

片刻之后，疼痛消退，他吃惊地睁大了眼睛。

" Who is this?" he exclaimed." How are you —?"

“这是谁？”他惊叹道，“你怎么——？”

He paused, listening to a voice only he could hear. Then he nodded

他停顿下来，听着一个只有他能听到的声音。然后他点了点头。

" Yes, of course I remember you. Who could forget?"

“是的，我当然记得你。谁能忘得掉呢？”

He barked out a short, humorless laugh." But I thought you were dead!

他短促地、不带笑意地笑了一声。“但我以为你死了！

That crazy old woman told the palace that she was going to..."

His words trailed off and he cocked his head, listening again

他的话音越来越小，歪着头，又倾听起来。

" Yes, I see," he said." Well, I'm glad

“是的，我明白了，”他说，“嗯，我很高兴。

I've missed your business. But where are you now?"

我一直惦记着你的事。不过你现在在哪儿？”

A loud cheer rose from the gathering below, but the man hardly heard it

The voice in his head was speaking again

" Who? Oh," the man said." Yes, I can do that."

This time when he listened, he frowned

这次他听到后皱起了眉头。

He rose to his feet and began pacing

他站起身，开始踱步。

" I never fail!" he snapped." Never! Besides, I know the perfect person to help us."

“我从未失败过！”他厉声说道，“从来没有！而且，我知道有完美的人选能帮我们。”

Another brief pause followed." Of course I know who is trustworthy

又是一阵短暂的停顿。“我当然知道谁值得信任。

If you doubt my judgment, perhaps you should find someone else!"

如果你怀疑我的判断，不如另请高明！”

He listened again, his mouth curving into a slight smile. Finally he nodded

他又听了听，嘴角微微上扬。最后他点了点头。

" Yes, I'm glad you see that." He wandered back onto the balcony and glanced at the scene below

“是的，我很高兴你明白了。”他漫步回到阳台，瞥了一眼下面的场景。

" It's a deal. We shall make them all pay!"

“一言为定。我们要让他们全都付出代价！”

He laughed along with the voice in his head." I'll begin immediately."

他跟着脑海中的声音一起笑了起来。“我马上就开始。”

" See you tomorrow, Zann," someone called

“明天见，赞恩，”有人喊道。

Zann waved without looking to see who'd spoken, and then stepped outside

赞恩挥了挥手，没看是谁说的，然后走了出去。

After two months at First City Academy, he knew most of the kids ' names

在第一城学院待了两个月，他知道了大多数孩子的名字。

But he still didn't feel as if he had true friends

" Not like back home in Swamp Bottom," he thought

Zann grimaced, reminding himself that Swamp Bottom wasn't " home " anymore

Rubbing his fingers together, he stepped away from the building and muttered," Zap!"

他搓了搓手指，从建筑物旁走开，轻声念叨：“嗖！”

Zann looked around. He was standing in a neighbor's decorative fountain

赞恩环顾四周。他正站在邻居的装饰喷泉里。

" Drat," Zann said

“糟糕。”赞恩说。

The neighbor was picking flutter flowers nearby

邻居正在附近摘飘摇花。

" Sorry," Zann said to her

“对不起。”赞恩对她说。

She looked irritated for a second before her expression changed

她先是有点恼怒，但很快表情就变了。

" Oh, it's young Zann, the hero!" she exclaimed

“哦，是小英雄赞恩啊！”她喊道。

" How are you? And how are those worlds-traveling parents of yours?"

" Fine, thanks," Zann said politely." Excuse me, I have to go."

“都很好，谢谢。”赞恩礼貌地说，“不好意思，我得走了。”

It still felt strange when people treated him like a celebrity

被人当成名人对待，他还是觉得别扭。

Months had passed, but it still happened all the time

几个月过去了，这种事还是常常发生。

He hurried over to his house. When he opened the front door, Zing flew out

他匆匆赶回家。一打开前门，小星就飞了出来。

The dragon chattered and spat flames

小龙叽叽喳喳地叫着，喷吐着火焰。

" Sorry I'm late," Zann told Zing." I had to stay after school for an assembly about Void rights

“抱歉，我回来晚了，”赞恩对星仔说，“放学后我得留下来，参加一个关于虚空族权利的集会。

The headmaster said that we're all supposed to work at getting along — Reds, Voids, dragons..."

校长说，我们所有人都应该努力和睦相处——红魔法师、虚空族、龙……”

Zann hadn't been paying much attention to the Void rights protests

赞恩之前一直没太关注那些虚空族权利的抗议活动。

But the assembly had made him think about Darb

And that made him homesick for Swamp Bottom again

这又让他开始想念沼泽底的家了。

He hadn't seen Darb for more than two months — nor their friends Perda and Gliss

Zing started zipping around overhead, sending flames everywhere. Zann conjured some dragon treats

星仔开始在头顶飞快地转圈，把火焰喷得到处都是。赞恩变出了一些龙食。

" It's okay, boy," he called, tossing Zing the treats

“好孩子，没事的，”他喊道，把零食抛给星仔。

" I know you've been stuck in the house all day

“我知道你一整天都闷在屋里。

But now we can go to Palace Park and play

但现在我们可以去宫殿公园玩了。

I just have to stop by the lab first to tell Mom and Dad where we're going."

我得先去实验室告诉爸妈我们要去哪儿。

Zann considered sending his parents a message moth

赞恩想给父母发一只信蛾。

Luckily, they'd stopped monitoring his every move

But for a month or so after Morb had been banished from Magica, Zann had had to check in with his parents all the time

Zann tried to grab Zing to zap them both to the lab

" Okay, I guess we'll walk," Zann said with a shrug

He headed down the street, whistling for Zing to follow

他沿着街道走去，吹着口哨叫星仔跟上。

Zing sped past him, diving to shoot flames at a passing flip fly

星仔从他身边冲过，俯冲朝一只飞过的弹跳蝇喷火。

" Hey!" A man cried, jumping aside as the flames missed the fly and almost hit him

“嘿！”一个男人叫道，闪身躲开，火焰没打中苍蝇，差点烧到他。

" Oops," Zann called and grabbed Zing by the wing

“哎呀，”赞恩喊道，一把抓住星仔的翅膀。

" Come on, little buddy, let's take the quick way."

“来吧，小伙伴，我们走快路吧。”

Zap!

噼啪！

They landed across the street from the lab where Zann's parents worked

他们落在赞恩父母工作的实验室对面街上。

Zing yanked free immediately, diving down to attack a wiggle weed growing out of a crack in the sidewalk

星仔立刻挣脱，俯冲下去攻击人行道裂缝里长出来的一株摇摆草。

Zann hardly noticed. He stared at a group of about a dozen people

赞恩几乎没注意。他盯着大约十几个人。

They were marching around in front of him holding a Void rights banner

他们举着虚空族权利的横幅，在他面前来回游行。

Several people stood nearby and watched the marchers

附近站着几个人，看着游行队伍。

" Not another protest!" Zann muttered, shaking his head

“又一场抗议！”赞恩咕哝着，摇了摇头。

He forgot about that when he saw a message moth fluttering toward him. Zing saw it too

当他看到一只信蛾朝他飞来时，就忘了这事。星仔也看见了。

" Zing, stop!" Zann grabbed the moth before the dragon could incinerate it

“星仔，停下！”赞恩在小龙把它烧掉之前抓住了信蛾。

Zann smiled when he spotted several names scrawled on one wing

赞恩看到一只翅膀上潦草地写着几个名字，笑了。

The moth had come from his friends in Swamp Bottom!

信蛾是从他沼泽底的朋友那儿来的！

Before he could read their message, he heard a shout of anger

还没等他读他们的信息，就听到一声愤怒的叫喊。

" Give that back, you fire-breathing thief!"

“还回来，你这个喷火的小偷！”
