" Hermes must have annoyed the other gods last night," Julia murmured to Markos

It was the following day. Julia and Markos were in the gymnasium, sitting on their usual bench watching Brody's training

那是第二天。茱莉亚和马科斯在体育馆里，坐在他们往常坐的长椅上观看布罗迪训练。

Today Brody was practicing boxing. He'd spent the past few minutes sparring against Hermes himself

Markos gasped as Hermes landed yet another jab on Brody's shoulder, and Brody fell back with a grunt

" And now Brody is paying the price

Julia watched as Hermes danced around, jabbing at Brody every chance he got. She winced

The messenger god seemed to be enjoying himself

He flitted back and forth, taking advantage of his greater height, speed, and strength, as well as his winged sandals

So far Brody hadn't landed a single punch, although he'd received plenty from Hermes

Hermes grinned." Don't hesitate to cheer for your mortal friend, boy," he called to Markos good-naturedly

" He needs all the help he can get!"

" Urgh!" Brody grunted, lunging at Hermes

But once again his punch missed the mark

Hermes sidestepped easily and hit Brody on the ear as Brody went by

" I don't want to watch anymore," Julia told Markos with a shudder

She glanced around for something else to do, but the gymnasium was nearly deserted

" Let's go to the agora and find out if Alcides has arrived yet

Today is the day he's supposed to arrive, right?"

Markos was leaning forward, watching the fight with interest

" Alcides is not in Olympia yet," he said

" If he were here, we'd have heard about it."

Julia sighed and sat back. She looked away as Hermes punched Brody in the nose, sending sweat and a little blood flying

Now she could see that Apollo was wandering toward them

" Nice moves, Hermes," Apollo said." It's a good thing you're getting your champion used to losing

Hermes frowned at the other god. But before he could say a word, the ground beneath the gymnasium let out an ominous rumble

" What was that?" Julia exclaimed." An earthquake?"

“那是什么？”茱莉亚惊呼道，“地震了吗？”

Suddenly the ground split open. Dirt and sand sprayed everywhere

地面突然裂开了。泥土和沙子四处飞溅。

Hermes and Apollo jumped back as a chasm appeared in the spot where they'd been standing

赫尔墨斯和阿波罗向后跳开，他们刚才站的地方出现了一道深渊。

Brody just stood there staring, and Hermes had to fly in and grab him so he didn't fall into the chasm

" What's going on?" Julia cried, grabbing Markos by the arm

Markos' face had gone pale. He pointed." Hades is here."

The chasm belched out black smoke, and then a god stepped out

深渊喷出黑烟，然后一位神祇走了出来。

" Hades," Julia whispered, impressed and a little scared." The god of the underworld!"

“哈迪斯，”朱莉娅轻声说，既着迷又有些害怕。“冥界之神！”

Hades' chest and shoulders were broad, and he had pale skin, sleek dark hair, and a craggy, ugly face

哈迪斯的胸膛和肩膀很宽阔，皮肤苍白，乌黑光亮的头发，脸粗糙不平，很丑陋。

He was holding a chain in one strong hand

他一只强壮有力手里握着一条链子。

The other end of the chain was fastened to the collar of the largest dog Julia had ever seen

But this was no ordinary dog. It had three heads and a serpent for a tail

" Is that... is that Cerberus?" Julia asked Markos in a shaky voice

" The three-headed dog that guards the gates of the underworld?"

“那只守卫冥界大门的三头犬？”

" Of course!" Markos said

Brody hurried over to his friends, staying far away from the edge of the chasm

布罗迪赶紧跑到朋友们身边，远远地躲开裂缝边缘。

" What's going on?" he asked. He spit out a mouthful of saliva mixed with blood." Who is that?"

“怎么回事？”他问道，吐出一口混合着血的唾沫。“那是谁？”

" Hades," Julia told him with a shiver." He's the god of the underworld."

“哈迪斯，”朱莉娅打了个寒颤，告诉他，“他是冥界之神。”

" The underworld?" Brody echoed

“冥界？”布罗迪重复道。

旁白 neutral

Markos nodded." It's where the dead go after their lives are over. It's known as Hades."

马科斯点点头。“是人死后去的地方。那地方也叫哈迪斯。”

Brody shook his head and looked at Markos in confusion

布罗迪摇摇头，困惑地看着马科斯。

旁白 neutral

" Okay, Hermes hit me pretty hard a few times," he said

“好吧，赫尔墨斯确实狠狠揍了我几下，”他说。

" But did you really just say that guy's name is Hades — and the place he comes from is also called Hades?"

“但你刚才真说那家伙叫哈迪斯——而且他来的地方也叫哈迪斯？”

" That's right," Julia said, wondering if Brody had paid any attention at all in social studies class

“没错，”朱莉娅说，心想布罗迪在社会常识课上到底有没有听讲。

Brody snorted with laughter." Hades from Hades! Good one!"

布罗迪扑哧一声笑了出来。“来自哈迪斯的哈迪斯！真逗！”

Julia rolled her eyes and turned to watch as Hades looped Cerberus' chain around a column

朱莉娅翻了个白眼，转过身去，看着哈迪斯把刻耳柏洛斯的链子拴在一根柱子上。

" Guard this entrance," Hades commanded the three-headed dog, pointing to the chasm." Do not let the dead escape!"

“守住这个入口，”哈迪斯指着裂缝命令三头犬，“别让死者逃出来！”

Julia's eyes widened." Can the dead really escape from the underworld?" she whispered to Markos

朱莉娅睁大了眼睛。“死者真能从冥界逃出来吗？”她小声问马科斯。

旁白 neutral

" They can try. That's why Hades usually visits the surface through the entrance that lies across the river Acheron," Markos whispered back

“他们可以试试。所以哈迪斯通常都是穿过阿刻戎河那边的入口来到地面，”马科斯小声回答。

" He must be in a hurry if he decided to open a portal here in Olympia."

“他决定在奥林匹亚这里开个传送门，肯定是有急事。”

Hermes and Apollo looked perfectly relaxed as Hades stepped toward them

当哈迪斯走向他们时，赫尔墨斯和阿波罗看起来十分轻松。

" Greetings, Hades," Apollo said." What brings you to this side of the Earth's surface?"

Hades greeted them." It is good to see you

I am here to see the champion my brother Zeus claims is the best he's ever seen

I hear this amazing mortal has just arrived in Olympia."

" What?" Hermes exclaimed." Why didn't we know of this?"

“什么？”赫尔墨斯惊叫道。“我们怎么不知道这事？”

Apollo smirked." Ah, so the messenger of the gods is the last to receive this particular message, huh? Too bad, Hermes."

阿波罗得意地笑了。“啊，原来众神的信使是最后一个收到这条特别消息的，嗯？真可惜啊，赫尔墨斯。”

Hades laughed loudly." Never mind," Hades went on

哈迪斯大声笑起来。“没关系，”哈迪斯继续说道。

" If Zeus isn't here, perhaps he is bringing his hero to the agora first."

“如果宙斯不在这儿，也许他正先把他的英雄带去市集了。”

Hermes' scowl disappeared, replaced by an eager expression

赫尔墨斯脸上的怒容消失了，取而代之的是一副急切的表情。

" What are we waiting for?" he cried." Let's go to the agora at once!"

“我们还等什么？”他喊道。“我们马上去市集！”
