him more determined to investigate the circus.

Just then a monster approached." Hey, Mr. Scribblebottom!

Fwoosh! A burst of flames shot from the monster's nostrils

" So much for my investigation," Ben thought as he floated away

He hadn't learned a single thing, and tonight was the show

At home that afternoon, the project with Bones wasn't going

any better than the circus investigation.

" It's no use, Ben," Sid moaned." Mom's going

to make us get rid of Bones."

They'd spent the last hour trying to get Bones to settle down, but the dog

continued to whirl through the house like a tornado.

Right now Bones was gnawing on a slipper

When Ben tried to take it away from him, Bones turned

it into a game of tug-of-war.

Dad floated into the room." What's up, guys?"

" I thought you'd be more excited about going to the circus tonight

Hey..." Dad frowned as pink fluff flew into the air

" Is that your mother's slipper?"

" Ben told Bones to drop it, but he doesn't listen," Sid said

" He never listens!" Ben added

Dad floated over to Bones." Drop it!" he said firmly

Bones looked up from the slipper for a second and cocked his head at Dad

Then he calmly went back to shredding the slipper

" See?" Ben said

" Good behavior doesn't happen overnight," Dad said

" You have to work with him often to teach him commands

Eventually he'll get trained."

He looked back at Bones and calmly repeated the command." Drop it!"

This time Bones actually opened his mouth and let the slipper fall

Dad scooped up the slipper." Training takes time and patience."

" Lots and lots of time and patience," Ben muttered

" Hey!" Sid's eyes suddenly lit up

" I have an idea — let's hypnotize Bones. That would

be much faster than all this training stuff!"

" You can't hypnotize a dog, Sid," Ben said

" I've seen ghosts who are hypnotized," Sid went on excitedly

" They look like zombies — like this."

He stared straight ahead with an empty look

in his eyes. "Come on, Ben! Let's try it!"

" Creative idea, Sid," Dad said with a smile

" But you'd probably have more success just by training Bones every day."

He glanced at the clock

to the show right after dinner."

As he headed out the door with the dog, Sid's zombie

impression flashed in his mind.
