Sara was so hungry and tired, she drifted off to sleep quickly

She also did not know what woke her up in the middle of the night

It had been a noise. The skylight had made a small click as it closed

Now a man dressed in white crouched on the roof and secretly watched Sara

At first when Sara woke up, she did not open her eyes

She felt too sleepy. Strangely enough, she also felt warm and comfortable

" I must be dreaming," she murmured." This is such a nice dream

I'll keep my eyes closed. I don't want to wake up."

Sara thought that warm blankets were heaped upon her bed

萨拉觉得，温暖的毯子正堆在她的床上。

She reached out her hand and touched a down quilt

她伸出手，摸到一床羽绒被。

Then she heard a fire crackling

接着，她听到炉火噼啪作响。

" Oh, this is so lovely." She squeezed her eyes tighter

“哦，这太美好了。”她更紧地闭上眼睛。

" I must make this dream last."

“我一定要让这个梦做久一点。”

But she kept waking up

可她总是一次次醒来。

Sara finally opened her eyes and looked around her room

萨拉终于睁开眼睛，环顾自己的房间。

To her astonishment she saw a real fire glowing in the fireplace

让她惊讶的是，她看见壁炉里燃着真正的火焰，闪闪发亮。

A brass kettle was bubbling and hissing

一把黄铜水壶正咕嘟咕嘟冒着气泡，嘶嘶作响。

There was a thick red rug on the floor

In front of the fire stood a small table and chair

Upon the table were several covered dishes and a teapot

A bright lamp with a pink shade gave the room a rosy glow

It looked to Sara like a fairyland

" This can't be real!" said Sara

She stepped near the blazing fire and spread out her hands

" It's hot! A fire in a dream wouldn't be hot!"

Sara dashed around the room, touching the table, the dishes, the rug

萨拉在房间里跑来跑去，摸了摸桌子、盘子和地毯。

She picked up the red robe and held it to her cheek

她拿起那件红色的睡袍，贴在脸颊上。

" It's warm! It's soft!" She almost sobbed." It's all real. It must be!"

“好暖和！好柔软！”她几乎要哽咽了。“这一切都是真的。一定是的！”

She put on the robe and stepped into the slippers

她穿上睡袍，又把脚伸进拖鞋里。

" They're real too! I am not — I am not dreaming!"

Sara almost staggered to the books

萨拉几乎是跌跌撞撞地走向那些书。

She opened the one on top of the pile and found a message:

To the little girl in the attic. From a friend

致阁楼里的小女孩。来自一位朋友。

She put her face down on the page and burst into tears

她把脸埋在书页上，突然哭了起来。

" I don't know who it is, but somebody cares about me. I have a friend."

“我不知道是谁，但有人关心我。我有一个朋友了。”

Sara took her candle and slipped into Becky's room

萨拉拿着蜡烛，悄悄溜进了贝琪的房间。

She stood quietly by Becky's bed

" Becky! Becky! Wake up!" she whispered as loudly as she dared

"贝琪！贝琪！醒醒！"她尽量提高声音，悄悄地喊着。

Startled out of sleep, Becky sat upright

贝琪从睡梦中惊醒，一下子坐了起来。

Her face was still smudged with tears

她的脸上还挂着泪痕。

She was frightened until she realized Sara had awoken her

起初她吓了一跳，直到看清是萨拉叫醒了她。

Dressed in a beautiful red robe and holding a candle, Sara looked like a princess

萨拉穿着一件漂亮的红色长袍，手拿蜡烛，看起来就像一位公主。

" Come with me," said Sara." Becky, you must come at once."

"跟我来，"萨拉说。"贝琪，你得马上来。"

Becky was still too dazed to speak

贝琪还神情恍惚，说不出话来。

She simply got up and followed Sara, her mouth and eyes wide open

她只是起身跟着萨拉，嘴巴和眼睛都睁得大大的。

When they reached Sara's room, Sara pulled Becky into the warm, glowing room

到了萨拉的房间，萨拉把贝基拉进温暖明亮的屋子里。

Becky could not believe her eyes

She blinked and asked," Is it real, miss?"

她眨了眨眼，问道：“小姐，这是真的吗？”

Sara nodded." It's real!" she said

" I've touched everything, and it's all as real as we are

Something magical has happened while we slept."

For the rest of the night, the two girls sat by the fire and enjoyed a hot, tasty meal

" Do you think it could all disappear?" asked Becky

" Maybe we should eat quickly." She crammed a sandwich into her mouth

" No, it won't disappear," Sara replied." Take your time."

“不会的，不会消失，”萨拉回答，“你慢慢吃。”

The girls slowly ate their meal while they talked

两个女孩边聊边慢慢吃着饭。

Soon they felt warm, happy, and sleepy

When it was time to go back to bed, Sara realized that she had more than enough blankets

" Here, Becky. Take some blankets for your bed," she said

Becky got ready to go

At the door she turned for one last look at the room

" It's so beautiful!" she said

" If it all disappears tomorrow, I don't want to forget any of it."
