" Are you the son of the shoemaker?" the doctor asked

The pig was trying to climb on the doctor's lap

" You just need some cream on it

Oh, would you mind bringing me my bag?"

Tommy carried the bag over to the doctor

Dr. Dolittle poked around in his bag

He handed Tommy a jar

The jar was half full of water

Inside was a funny creature swimming around

" Dr. Dolittle, what's this?" said Tommy, lifting the jar

Tommy had never heard of a wiff-waff before

" It's a creature related to the shellfish," the doctor explained

“它是一种和贝类有亲缘关系的生物。”医生解释道。

" That's the language I'm trying to learn at the moment."

The doctor frowned

医生皱起了眉头。

" But shellfish talk is very difficult."

" You mean this thing has a language?"

Tommy pointed to the creature

汤米指着那生物。

" All living things have a language," said Dr. Dolittle

" How can you learn their language?" Tommy asked

" It takes a lot of patience and careful attention," the doctor replied

" Doctor! My toe!" Gub-Gub oinked

" Sorry, Gub-Gub. Here we are."

The doctor opened another jar and put some cream on the pig's toe

医生打开另一个罐子，往猪的脚趾上抹了些药膏。

Tommy was thoughtful

He wondered if Dr. Dolittle could help the wounded squirrel

他猜想杜立德医生能不能帮助那只受伤的松鼠。

" Can you speak squirrel language?" he finally asked

“你会说松鼠语吗？”他终于问道。

The doctor smiled

医生笑了。

" Of course. It's very easy to learn."

“当然。这很好学。”

So Tommy told the doctor all about the squirrel, and the doctor agreed to come look at the sick animal

于是汤米把松鼠的事全告诉了医生，医生同意来看看这只生病的动物。

Suddenly the duck burst into the room, quacking loudly

突然，鸭子冲进房间，大声嘎嘎叫着。

The doctor jumped up in surprise

医生惊讶地跳了起来。

" Dab-Dab! What's the matter?" he shouted

“达布达布！怎么了？”他喊道。

The duck waved his wings wildly and squawked

鸭子疯狂地拍打着翅膀，嘎嘎地叫着。

Tommy wondered what the duck was saying

汤米想知道鸭子在说什么。

" Oh, this is a dream come true!" the doctor clapped his hands

“哦，这真是梦想成真了！”医生拍着手说。

He turned to Tommy and said excitedly

他转向汤米，激动地说：

" My oldest and dearest friend has returned from Africa."

“我那位最老、最亲的朋友从非洲回来了。”

Tommy smiled politely

" Come! You must meet Polynesia."

Everyone followed the duck into the kitchen

Tommy looked around but could not see Dr. Dolittle's friend

" Polynesia!" called the doctor

The doctor ran toward a large parrot sitting on a chair

The doctor's dearest friend was a bird!

Although Tommy could not understand animal language, he knew everyone was excited to see the parrot

虽然汤米听不懂动物语言，但他知道大家见到鹦鹉都很兴奋。

" Who is that, doctor?" Polynesia looked at Tommy

“医生，那是谁？”波利尼西亚看着汤米。

" That's Tommy," the doctor answered

" Hello, Tommy," the parrot suddenly called out to him

Tommy's eyes opened wide

His heart started to beat faster

He clearly understood the parrot's language!

" Dr. Dolittle?" he called out

“杜立德医生？”他叫了出来。

" What's wrong, Tommy?

You look pale!" the doctor said worriedly

" I... I understood the bird

I understood," Tommy replied in an excited voice

Dr. Dolittle and Polynesia looked at each other

I spoke to you in human language!" Polynesia laughed

" Polynesia is the best teacher," Dr. Dolittle praised
